Monday Moment for Down Syndrome - Don't Pity Me

Sorry for the lack of Monday Moments. I look forward to getting back to posting these each week.

Over the last 4 years I have collected MANY poems and stories about Down syndrome and special needs in general. Since a lot of my readers have kids with special needs, I thought I would post one poem or story every Monday. Chances are you'll find one you've never heard along the way!

Don't Pity Me
By: Joanne Green

Don't pity me
because my child was not born
"perfect", for in his imperfection I have
learned to see beauty that is deeper
than the flesh.

Don't pity me
because my child and I have faced challenges
that have served to forge
a bond much deeper than love.

Don't pity me,
because you could not have done this,
for I thought that too once,
before I learned that through love you can do
a great many things you once couldn't do.

Don't pity me,
my child is the greatest blessing to ever touch my life
I am rich to have him, and richer still for
the experience of knowing him.
And if you are truly my friend,
then you will understand.

And please,
Don't Pity Me.

Love this. I'm going to plagerize. LOL How do you spell plagerize? This is perfect for the awareness to DS that I've been trying to work on over on my adoption blog. Don't sue me for copyright. LOL

I just came onto your blog through google alerts! I am looking to add stories of other peoples lives touched by Down syndrome and other disabilities. I absolutely LOVE your poem! Did you write it or did someone else?
I would love to include this in my "Everyone has a story" series on my blog. I would like to include your link to your blog to mine if you don't mind also.
My blog is http://www.mosaicmoments.today.com

Thanks
Kristy

so true. Before my son needed heart surgery and a kidney transplant, I didnt know anyone who ever needed/had those done so when they told me, I was shocked, I thought I couldnt do this, and that was 20 years ago and just a part of our every day lives.

Hi there, I've been reading your blog since the day Kennedy had sugery - found you through my semblance of sanity.

I love this poem! I don't have any downs kids in my family but I went to High School with a couple & they were some of the best people I ever met. My school had a program that transitioned downs & CP kids from their own classroom into the 'regular' classes. I had a kid named Travis in my choir class & ever since knowing him, I've had a soft spot for people with downs. Travis was the most loving guy you could meet & sang like an angel. He had a way of making you feel better about whatever you were going through...mostly teenage agnst at the time, LOL!
I know there are a lot of challenges but I think you are truly blessed to have Kennedy as your child. She is absolutely darling & I'll bet that smile just lights up a room.
You may be assured that I will never pity you! I'll pray for you, weep for you, and rejoice with you but never never will I pity you.
God bless,
Alane

Yes, Renee! I DID see this and wanted to "borrow" it. I'll give credit where credit is due. Don't worry. Hope you're all okay. Please know that I'm here if you need anything. I used to make that drive daily for work. Anyway, we have to get the kids together to meet. Still praying for Kennedy.

Hi Renee!
I'm Master Dillon's Mom!
I finally had a chance to check out your blog! How great it is. You have such an amazing story!!I'm so glad that Kennedy is doing so well & that you had such a nice visit with your husband!

Thank you so much for posting this on your blog. Being a single mom of a child with DS, I get many pity comments. It's very hard to describe how much of a blessing Dillon is. Sure, there are trying times but the blessing outway them so much! I have become so much of a stronger person since I had Dillon. Trip to Holland is my favorite poem, but this one is great too...I had to add it to my blog.
Thanks again for this helps me to express how great this life truely is...I consider myselft gifted!

Will have you in my prayers!
Melissa
