To backpack or not to backpack?

So here's the thing... Kassidy and Kameron have perfectly good backpacks from last year. They actually held up surprisingly well. Kameron has a Transformer backpack... and he's still into Transformers. Kassidy has a High School Musical backpack... and she's 8 so DUH she still likes High School Musical. But guess what? They want new ones.

So do I buy my kids new backpacks when Kameron will be getting yet ANOTHER Transformer backpack (of course this one will have Optimus Prime instead of Bumblebee) and Kassidy will either pick a DIFFERENT High School Musical one... or maybe Hannah Montana... or heaven forbid the Jonas Brothers... so in my mind they can just use the ones they have (which are still in VERY good shape) but they both want new ones...

SO you... my blogging buddies and blog readers get to decide if my kids get new backpacks or not! Leave your vote in the comment section:

YES buy your kids new backpacks! New Year, New Stuff!
or
NO they'll be just fine with the backpacks they have. They can get new ones next year.

Majority Rules!

I vote no new backpacks but then I'm a teacher not a Mom :-)

I vote yes! Use the others as things to carry stuff to grandma's and such. I always loved goin to school the first day with all new stuff.

I vote no because I'm doing the same with mine. We saw back packs today at the store and of course Kaitlyn went right for Tinkerbell. I told her that hers was perfectly fine she doesn't need a new one. She said she wanted something different. It's not happening though.

Now, on the flip side of it I didn't buy Natalie a new one last year. Actually, I had an extra one from the previous year which had never been used so she really didn't need a new one because this one wasn't at all used. Well mid year the zipper on the darn thing broke and I had to buy her a new one anyways. Of course by then the selection wasn't what it was at the beginning of the school year and she gave us a problem with the one she got, but yet she's not getting a new one this year either. I suppose I just made you more confused here though.

I'd probably just tell them if we don't buy a back pack then we'll be able to get something else that they'd really like to go back to school instead. I can't believe they are going back already. Then again they were out much earlier than mine. We don't go back until the end of August. Good thing because I'm not ready to buy all the back to school stuff.

I (meaning my MIL) always buy them new backpacks, but unfortunately mine don't last the year. So they end the year with a new one, but I keep it for the "end of the next year". Saves me from buying each of them two backpacks every year, just every other year LOL!!

Anonymous said...

Of course I know you shouldn't buy new ones. But... I have to vote yes, because I would definately want mine to be able to start with new stuff. It's just... well, more fun that way.

I buy LL Bean backpacks and they hold up FOREVER. Our middle school starts in 4th, so Emily will be getting a new backpack for middle school this year, but Ryan has three more years with his, lol. Seriously, Emily's is still in really good condition and barely has any visible dirt at all, but I figured MS was a good time for a new one. Same thing with lunchboxes, as I get those from LL Bean as well. Not to mention that they don't outgrow them b/c they don't have characters on them...my kids are way too fickle for that, lol.

That said, they get new everything else...even the notebooks that came home from last year with ONE page used went in the craft drawers! WHY do teachers do that, btw?

Michelle said...

Oh, I vote no. I used to get a new backpack for each school year for Karly - but now I see it as a waste of money. I only buy them when needed. Braden's had the same backpack for 3 years now (he'll be in pre-K this fall, so it hasn't gotten much use yet...)

Missy said...

I have to vote no...but I am way too thrifty sometimes. It drives my boyfriend nuts, but in my opinion, why buy new when the old is still usable. Just my opinion

Ashley's Attic said...

I'm a shop owner who sells back packs so I say YES! Lol...but seriously, it does give a kid a sense of confidence going back to school and new is just more fun!

Bethany said...

Umm, I say yes because I'm a snob like that! ROFL. Honestly, this backpack conversation seems to be everywhere lately and the backpacks have been flying off the shelves at platypus! LOL

I say buy new backpacks!

Holly Aytes said...

I vote yes (mainly to make me feel better since I just bought 3 new backpacks)! It is always nice to have a new backpack to go with the new school supplies :) We held onto our old ones to use for trips (or you could always donate/give them away).

Carol VR said...

You wouldn't believe how something som trivial can become a topic of debate.

I'm cheap and if it means more being spent where it's needed than I'd let them use last years back packs. Heaven knows we can accumulate enough unnecessary stuff with out going out and looking for it.

sherry said...

Yes! Everyone needs to start the year off on a clean slate! We use my Kelly's for trips, visits, to hold stuff to take while waiting for the doctor, etc.

Joy said...

Well, I should tell you that they should use the same backpacks, but that would mean I would have to follow the same rule. My kids want new ones too, and I plan on buying them new ones, even though they dont' need them. I just think back to when I was in school, and I would have been horrified to go to school on the 1st day with last years backpack!

Anonymous said...

I vote no! If there is no wear and tear on the old ones, what's the problem??? Oh yeah, kids want everything new. Cant really blame them, but being a sort of thrifty mom...reuse, reuse, reuse!!

My son just graduated from High School with the same backpack he started his freshmen year with. It's still in great shape!

RK said...

I have to go with no, I'd use the old ones if they're still in good shape. I'm in a thrifty phase with all that's going on here, so maybe that's it. I totally (!!) get the new pack for new year thing, but it's also good to teach that "good stewardship" lesson, right?

Shari said...

I go with no. I explained to my kids last year that they got "generic" backpacks with no characters, etc. because they were going to be used until they fell apart. They were completely OK with that and I embroidered their initials on them so they were more personal to them. :)

Brittney Ekberg said...

I vote yes. I get my girls new backpacks every year. They're not fancy and expensive but I think that should get something new to start the year off with. However, this year we are not buy "school clothes" yet because they have plenty. But I think a backpack is a small expression of themselves for that year.

TheAngelForever said...

I also say no. I plan on using my son's backpack from last year again. It is in decent shape. After this I am likely going to invest in an LLBean one that will not go in and out of style and will hold up. I still have my backpack that my parents bought me in 4th grade.

This will certainly be a good lesson to the kids. Remind them that they are lucky to have bags that they still like and many other children are not so lucky, no less some do not have the resources to even have one at all.

Good luck :)

Kristen said...

I am not buying Ethan a new one for this next year. His Cars backpack held up great and it is personalized. So, if Kass & Kam's are still in good shape- I say stick with them. Use the money for something else.

Holly said...

I say yes! I'm a teacher and the thing I love best about starting the school year is having brand new supplies! Just makse it more fun. And it's not like they cost a ton of money!

I vote "No"...but don't tell them Grandma voted that way...LOL
Use the money to buy something else - like putting gas in the van to drive to RITA'S!! (and take the Grandma with you... :o)

Well - the BC (before cancer) mom in me says no new bacpacks, but the AC(after cancer) mom in me says "get those babies a new backpack!!" :). Addie carried the same one the last two years and could care less - Ryan had to have clear last year - this year he was excited that he got to get whatever he wanted - he has a basically brand new Ninja Turtles one that I tried to convince him to carry - he said he just wanted to look - of course, he saw a Star Wars and really wanted it - all I could think was , "I am so thankful you are here to buy a backpack for - it's yours", and of course, Addie got a new one because it was time. Now, obviously - our kids have a great life and a new or used backpack will not be the end of the world, but if you can splurge on new ones - I think it does help make it much more fun to get back to school.

Glad you guys are adjusting okay - Addie asked today when we could go to Kennedy's house :) - maybe we can work that out!

Jenna said...

I vote yes. Your kids are amazing and have been through more in the past couple of years than most kids see their whole childhood. They deserve new backpacks. Plus, the teacher in me is a strong advocate for a fresh start at the beginning of the school year. Use the old backpacks for overnights, trips to Grandma's, etc.

Anonymous said...

I vote no. My kids went back to school on July 19th and I spent $200 just on the supplies the teachers requested. That was for all 3 kids classroom teachers. It doesn't count the list I now have from Olivia's gifted teacher. And then there are the stuff that Luke's special ed teacher, OT and ST wants. Plus all of his reinforcers, lotion and the such that the para's will need for him through the year! I have to draw the line somewhere and backpacks and lunch boxes loose out to supplies and clothes.

I vote no new backpacks. We know they will get new folders, pencils, markers, etc, so it is a great time to teach a wonderful life lesson......that we always don't get what we want AND that it it is important to not be wasteful.
From an older mom who has been there and done that :)

Karyn Reed said...

I vote no since they have perfectly fine backpacks already. When they wear out I would definately suggest getting them backpacks in their favorite color with no characters or anything on them. Then you can use them as long as they last. That is what we discovered last year. The kids get new pencils and crayons and notebooks and erasers and clothes. They can certainly continue to use the same backpacks for one more year.

sjomaples said...

If it were me right now, I'd say "no" as we are trying to save every penny to adopt a child with DS. I do know I'd want a new one though at that age so if you can afford it, go for it but my overall vote is "no".

Anonymous said...

I vote yes to new backpacks. One of my favorite parts of going back to school was picking out my new lunch box and my new school bag. In the grand scheme of things, it's a small thing to make them happy for the new year. Plus, you can take them somewhere to donate their old backpacks to charity so that a less fortunate kid can have a new backpack for a new year too.

JRS said...

I have to admit yes, I'd buy new ones realizing that it may not be the best lesson in being frugal that you can teach them. But, its been a hard summer/month/year and its really not a Huge purchase. It would be something just for each of them that they can pick out themselves and be excited about. Maybe you can have them donate their old ones to a shelter.

Meredith said...

This cracks me up! I vote no- but mostly because I like to use things until they're done. K can't bring a backpack to school this year- they have to have the official "bag" for the school... ug... so he gets a new one (thank goodness they're like $8).

Mom of Army Brats. said...

no new back packs. you can always get them mid year, or Christmas.

Leah said...

I vote no. Angela is the 5th kid in our house, and she's been told the same thing I told all the others. When she picks a backpack she better like it, because she's going to be using it until it's no longer usable (ie a zipper breaks, etc.) They usually wash up pretty nicely. This is the first year I'm breaking the rule with her, but only because she's moving up to middle school and her "Cars" packpack isn't really middle school appropriate. This year she's getting a plain one from Lands End. No designs (she wants spider man, LOL) nothing.

lesliemarie said...

I'm going to have to say no b/c my mom NEVER let me get a new one until mine fell apart. I did always get one of those patches to iron or sew on each year though. (I think it cost a dollar, so I'm sure it was a great compromise both ways. :) Those probably are way out of style by now, though!

Sherry said...

Wow, I've never had that problem. My oldest always wore her backpacks out until she got older. How did you manage to keep them in good shape?
I vote yes, buy new. Old ones can be for library visits or storing other things they have. I always worried more about the stigma of not having new stuff for school. When do your kids start school?

Anonymous said...

Can we vote more than once?? Those kids need new backpacks!!

Jenn said...

I get new ones every year because ours never last one year... I aim for 6 months. Maggie's was totaled this year by a carton of chocolate milk left (OPEN) in the back pack... in the car... for the week end!!!

NASTY!

It must be nice for them to survive that long!

Dawn said...

I say No, but, watch for them to go on clearance and buy them backpacks for Christmas.

Lea White said...

I say let them give you 5 good reasons why and that might make them think whether they really need it or not.

Or otherwise, buy new (new is always nice),but they have to donate the old ones to somebody who doesn't have and can't afford.

oh boy, that's tough. Even though i decided my boys are not getting new ones. My teen doesn't care and his is still new and the pack was expensive to begin with. Then my 8 y/o Loves sharks and last yr i got the brilliant idea of getting him a blue backpack (after consulting with my backpack savvy nephew) we went with Jansport. I bought and sewed on different shark patches. This yr he gets to add to the collection. He also wants to add netting. (I'll have to work on that one) So he's happy as a clam. Dh picked out our daughters backpack without her being there. She's going into Kindergarten and it has cutsie flowers all over. She's happy. (now had she been in the store we would have probably walked out with a hannah montana or Hello Kitty.) this is her first yr and needed one. Now next yr for her, IDK. Dh caves in. So if she was at all upset about not getting a new one dh would go ahead and get it for her......... that last part probably didn't help. BUT if they really really don't need a new one then i wouldn't get them new ones.

Peanut5005 said...

I say give them an option - either a new back pack or some other item that maybe they'll enjoy equally but still have some major use for

Amy© said...

Hmmm. Renee, don't say majority rules! It's totally up to you! If you want to know what I would say if fit were up to me... I'd say if it's really, really important to them to have a new back pack, then ok, but please donate the old back pack to charity. But if they are fine with carrying the old backpack, I wouldn't worry about it. And the folks posting about LL Bean backpacks? Yeah, they're awesome! Nothing to "date" them, and they last FOREVER. For a bit extra you can have their initials monogrammed on them (so much better than having their names monogrammed! Everyone reading this comment rush out and buy Gavin DeBecker's The Gift Of Fear! It is SUCH a good book!).

Oh, yeah, I couldn't actually "tag" anybody cause I couldn't figure out how you did that. Btw. But thank you! :D

Debbie Yost said...

This year I am not going to get new backpacks. Diva still likes hers and although she drooled over the new ones, she got a lunch box. I will have two kids buying lunch and they increased the cost 30 cents for elementary and Jr. High is more than that. I think we'll be making more lunches. MA hates her backpack but it's still in good condition so I talked her out of a new one just because she doesn't like the look. So, I'm voting, no. Ooh, I don't like how mean that sounds. I could be talked into yes with those big brown eyes your kids have!

Mary said...

I vote yes. I always LOVED getting brand new stuff for the new school year. Made me more excited!

Kelli said...

I told my older boys every other year, which only meant if they really wanted one it some how was ripped or something so they would HAVE to get a new one. I would still try to find a way to pass this year, maybe spread out kids so some get one one year and others the next year (when they all get big) so your not buying 4 new ones every year or 4 new ones on the same every other year, does that make sense? I am tired. I know kids like new ones so its so sad when they cant have every little thing they want or that all there friends get. So who knows. Glad its you and not me. Hugs

I say no. There's enough expense involved with "back to school" and really, just because it's a new school year doesn't mean kids NEED new stuff.

Yes....We actually reuse (old, lol) backpacks for Disneyland trips, overnight sleepovers, hiking trips, etc. so you'll most likely get plenty of use out of the "old" ones.

Laurie said...

I'm voting YES!!! One of the fun things about starting school at that age was the "new" school stuff and seeing everyone elses "new" stuff. The other thing too, is at that age with the characters on the packs certain ones can be "out" after a school term. I think when I got to Junior High or High School, I stopped getting new ones until I wore the old one out though.

I vote No. I am in the camp of being frugal. And I think it is nice to teach kids they do not always need more STUFF in life. I personally think kids/people have way too much stuff.

As long as they don't hate the theme and the packs are still in good working order, then I feel there really is no need.

I would go with a new one. Backpacks are generally pretty cheap and its fun to have a new one each year. (Plus Optimus Prime is A LOT cooler than plain old Bumblebee. ^_^)

Mindy said...

Oh, just thought of something else. Could you take your kids with you to get the new ones.. show them the cost and maybe hand them the 5 dollar bill to pay for it.. count the change, etc to make it educational and then take them with you to donate their old backpacks to a charity or a book drive? Maybe that would add more value to it rather than just buying a new backpack and tossing the old one aside.

God's Rock Angel said...

I like Mindy's idea.

I had a nike rucksack at middle school and my mum told me that if I wanted a new one while the nike one was still useable I had to save up my pocket money - she decided it would be better to get me a new one when nearly at christmas the strap had ripped

Anonymous said...

I vote no...if they're still in great shape, then what's the need? I also buy my son LL Bean backpacks...they last several years... and wash very well. Hope this helps! :)

Kellie said...

I vote no. If they're in almost new condition, there's no NEED for one. Kids shouldn't get new things because they want them--not all the time. Do as someone else suggested and perhaps at Christmas get them new ones.

YES buy your kids new backpacks! New Year, New Stuff!

I know times are tough but I say yes, they have been good right?

kntsmom said...

I vote no. My kids received backpacks from their dad at Christmas last year (at the time he was stationed in Kuwait) they are desert camo and they were so excited we switched to them right after christmas break. They held up great and are still in great shape, so we are using them again, and they are thrilled, of course being without dad for a year and being way attached to the fact that he sent them might be part of the reason why. But it was also a great lesson on how we cannot always get what we want just because we want it and when something is perfectly good there is no reason to spend the money on something new. Just my opinions. :D

Yes, I would buy new book bags. New school year means new book bags with new school supplies. It will make them feel special and whatever will make that first day of school better I am all for it.

I just went through this yesterday. Mark's has two perfect backpacks. So, he has to use last years. However, his lunch box was nasty so he did get to choose a new lunchbox and he was okay with that. I also let him choose his other school supplies. He's 8 and honestly I thought I would have a battle on my hands about getting a new backpack but he was okay with just a new lunchbox (Batman).

AZmomto8 said...

I vote no, use it until it is worn out before you replace it, what will happen to these old backpacks? Salvation Army? It took a while to convince my kids that they did not need a new backpack every year, so we chaecked if they were sturdy, no holes, and we kept them. however, some had to be replaced mid-year, and they are harder to find then. LOL

Laura Pember said...

I vote no. If the backpacks are still in good shape there is no reason to buy new ones.

I vote NO! You have enough new things that need to be purchased for them to go back to school. Save yourself the money on at least 2 things! My kids are both in middle school, and last year they're backpacks were just fine, so they used them until they weren't.

I vote yes! That's part of the back-to-school fun memories...new backpacks, supplies, etc.

I vote YES! Perhaps, you can re-use the other backpacks for small trips to the neighbors, old teachers, or Grandmas house if they have to only stay 1-2 nights! If they still like the old backpacks, they might think it is cool to pack them up to go to the beach or on an overnight adventure.
Thanks for letting us vote.

I say you should pick out the bags that you think that they would pick and then have daddy "send" the bags from overseas. This way, they start the new school year with a new bag and feel that daddy is with them everyday at school.

Kendra said...

I think you let them choose which option. Buy a new one or use the money for something else (additional clothes, new shoes, etc). If they go for new ones, you can always donate the used ones to a family at church that needs them. OR, let them pick out new ones to give to a family that needs them. I know, I didn't really give an answer, but my boys are young (3 and 1), so I haven't run into this problem yet! Sorry!

Jenn said...

I have always kept the last years one if it is still like new. Why waste money , and then when they need one buy it. They are going to have new everything else mostly anyways so the bag doesn't matter. Once they have a new outfit on and shoes and get to school with their friends they tend to not care.

Shannon @ Gabi's World said...

No. Still good, you still use them. I have 7 kids. Also, NEVER buy new ones in the beginning of the year. Wait until about 5 ot 6 weeks after school starts and target then has them 75% off. Your kids must not be that rough. Mine go through 2 to 3 backpacks per year/ per kid! It's nuts. Good luck but get them a new lunch box instead. Cheaper compromise.

For me personally, it's YES and NO. I always buy Laurie a new backpack every year. She has enough of a hard time fitting in and making conversation with her peers and at least a new backpack will help her break the ice.

But I always use Laurie's old backpack and give it to Kayla, since well, Kayla doesn't really care one way or the other.

Alright, I haven't looked at everyone's comments, but going with what I would do...I vote YES to new backpacks.
There's something about a new year, starting fresh. I know it doesn't really make logical sense, but there's just something inside me that thinks maybe they'll have a complex if they don't get a new one. If you look in my house you'll see a ton of backpacks (in perfectly decent condition) in my kids closets, which is an indication that I made the choice and not my husband!
So maybe you shouldn't take my vote. While Keandre & Jasmyne appreciate my off-the-wall thinking, I'm sure your kids will not be mentally scarred if they don't get new ones! ha ha
Good luck with that decision!

I vote yes....new backpack for the new year. Of course, we don't spend but $5-10 on backpacks. Grifyn and Xander's were $4.99 and Olivia's Hannah Montana one was
$10. Even with new backpacks, I spent less than $100 on supplies for 3 kids...and I literally had to buy one of every item on the list for the entire school!
For our "life lesson" involving school supplies, we're packing a box full of supplies to send to Iraq for a local school that a soldier we know is working with. Lesson learned about giving and those who have less...and new backpacks :)

Kathy said...

I have to say no, I'm of the opinion that a back pack is just a carrier for school supplies, not an accessory. Becca gets a new one when the old one wears out, and of course, she's outgrown the character ones, so can't complain about them being to "juvenile" lol.

Jaclyn said...

I vote no! I think teaching our kids that if they have something thats still in nice condition they do not need a relpacement for it. We go through life too often buying things we wnat and don't need. My kids are to the point now that they don't even ask for a new backpack unless something tragic has happened to theirs. They did however get new lunchpails because I could not get their old ones clean. Maybe comprimise with the kiddos... they can have their folders or pencils, something they need to have new in their favorite characters.

whatever to us said...

Mean mommy (or maybe just frugal) chiming in to say 'no'....Two of our kiddos are using the same backpacks this year (oldest and youngest), middle child is all ready back at school and needed a new one this year. Not because hers from last year was beyond use but it was an over the shoulder bag that hurt her back a lot at the end of school last year, so....$7 at Walmart later and she's got her new backpack. the one she really wanted? $54.00 at limited too.....our youngest is a boy who wanted a Dora backpack in the worst way last year- no way am I going through that battle again when Diego is just fine :)

of course, mommy knows best what will work for your kiddos. For mine, having a new outfit for the first day of school is more important to them than backpacks...

waldenhouse said...

I go with no. Mine has an Eddie Bauer that will likely last his entire education. It is neutral with no themes so it will stand the test of time and fads. The lunchbox can be of his choosing and themed, and new each year.

My kids get enough of what they want so in an effort to teach them to be good stewards of money we want them to learn that when things aren't really needed we pass. So far we haven't received much push back on it.

I'm gonna have to say yes. Don't you remember being that age? It was always the best to have a new outfit and a new school bag and, of course, new shoes on the first day of school! Save the old ones for taking toys in the car or to grandmas. Or you can save them in case the new ones do wear out before the end or the year, or they lose them or they get stolen. (Unfortunately that does happen!)

I'm going to be complicated and say give them a choice. Tell them they can have new backpacks this year (since they will want them VERY similar to what they have) and get them a really sturdy one with their name on it to use for a LONG time. OR tell them they can use the same ones at least for this year. I bet they will choose to keep them cuz a backpack with a name seems SO BORING when you're six and eight :)

Nope, sorry guys. Even this after cancer girl says no! My son is toughing it out with last years model too. Does spiderman ever go out of style... I don't think so! When it's got holes, or it's dirty and ugly (and can't be washed up)... then get a new one!

If it's yes... then have them help pay for them and turn it into a money lesson... on how much things cost... and find another child who needs a nice as new pack.

If it's no it is the lesson of ... new is not always better... it won't rub blisters on your shoulders, the zipper slides with ease. You know where all the pockets are. There will be "new things" in their backpack.

Better yet why don't you home school them?

...ah me there are so many options...

yes........get them new ones!! that was one of the most exciting things about going back to school....getting all new school supplies and packing them in a brand new back pack.

When my children were little, they always got a new backpack. It made going back to school so much more fun! We used the other one, if it lasted, for little outings and day trips. When they got to middle school, I invested in an LLBean backpack which has a lifetime warranty. They were used every year through High School. Yes, buy new ones.

In my opinion, I say no new backpacks unless they need one. Children need to learn that they live with what they have unless they need new ones. I never got my kids new backpacks unless their old ones were about to fall apart. I had 4 children and 2 stepchildren, so they had to learn to live with what they had and not expect new things just because they wanted it. Just my opinion.

Excellent question. Struggled with it myself as a mom of six. For about my first 10 years of parenting... NEW YEAR/NEW STUFF ruled. Then, as my kids became teenagers, I realize that they don't even remember that they had a new one each year, and practicality kicks in. If it is good, squeeze another year out of it... or squeeze until Christmas or a birthday and kill 2 birds with one stone! So, sorry kids, but NO NEW BACKPACKS. ~Shanna Marshall :*)

I may be late leaving a comment but I vote yes! :) Get new backpacks. We have to get new backpacks every year because ours never last through the year. I actually ended up buying 2 last year because Avery's fell apart in the middle of the year.

I vote get them new back packs. Those small things are good memories for them. In high school they will get a plain colored, life time gauranteed, jansport backpack and won't care about new one's. It will be fun for you to remember the new one's they had each year and their excitement to show them off.

Hi Renee!
I vote no to new backpacks. My son also has a monogrammed one from L.LBean & they are hands down the most durable & they never go out of style. Your kids tastes are going to be constantly changing & backpacks(esp themed)aren't cheap and most don't hold up well yr after yr. Keep us posted & good luck! As always, I continue to keep Kennedy & the entire Garcia family in my daily thoughts & prayers:)

I vote no to new backpacks. Sure they won't be happy with you for a day but what a fabulous opportunity to teach them that we don't always need a shiney new everything - how we should not be wasteful. I would physically put the money in a safe spot with your children and then some "rainy" day when they really want/need something, together pull that money out and use it.

I vote no when I was their age of course i wanted new stuff but i didn't need it so we didn't buy it same goes for all kids as far as I'm concerned. Unless the backpack is falling apart at the seems they don't need it.

I know this is a few months after school has started, but I would still like to share an opinion. Ipretty much always buy good quality items on sale. I am a big fan of the ll bean backpacks. They will replace them if anything messes up on them As we all know, the fad backpacks usually do. They have sales several times a year on their website. Also, if you live in the Northeastern states, you can visit one of the outlet stores and get the mistake monogrammed backpacks. It is not to hard to remove the threads. You can always have someone monogram new letters for you.In k-5, we had 2 fad hero backpacks before November that messed up. One on the first day. We ordered the junior one on sale and he still uses it for toys, the pool, etc.He is in 2nd grade now.I plan on having a friend pick one up at an outlet store in Maine when she goes for a visit. Get a new backpack now and don't worry about it again for another 4-5 years. They are awesome.
