Snot machines

Kennedy's croup has turned into a head cold. She actually slept really well last night with the decongestant I gave her. She's all snotty today though and the medicine knocks her out so I'm hesitant to give her more...

Keeghan had a horrible night and woke up screaming every 40 minutes or so. I thought it was his teeth, but he woke up all snotty this morning too. He climbed up in my lap this morning and laid there whining until he fell asleep about 5 minutes ago. Poor little guy. I'm not even sure I can give him anything since the stupid FDA took all the infant decongestants off the market. *grrr* When he wakes up I guess I will try Vicks Vaporub. Any other tips for a snotty baby?!

I love your favicon! I'm glad you thought it was easy!

And I wish I had some help for your snotty baby.

vapor bath and a nose bulb syringe
drops of saline or mists of it and then use the bulb. My kids always hated it. sorry! If I could, I'd come help!

My 3 year old son has never been able to take decongestants--the only over the counter meds he can take are benadryl and tylenol.

When he had a bad cold like that, I would use the saline drops in the nose (like Ocean spray or something like that), steamy bathrooms, humidifier, and vicks vapo rub.

I would give benadryl shortly before nap time and at night to help him sleep (because they do need the sleep to get better) and tylenol to help with the probable headaches, etc that he had.

If they start coughing, putting vicks vapo rub on the bottom of their feet and putting socks over it helps the coughing stop--no lie! : )

Also, with the croup--if you go into the steamy bathroom for awhile, then go out into the cold night air, they get more relief than only the bathroom. My daughter had croup almost non stop for a year when she was 2, and I remember that this worked well for her.

Hope they feel better soon,

Hope your kiddos feel better. Thanks for the info last night. Sarah seems to be better today. We did go to the Dr. and she does have blood in her stool. We are treating it at home for now, waiting on cultures.

Benadryl for the little ones to help dry them up. I love the vicks too but my kids wont let me put it on them so i put a sock on their hand and put some on the sock and have them put it by their nose. It also calms their cough. (not sure about croup, we haven't had that in a couple years.)
Hope they feel better soon!!
OH, LOVE THE SPECIAL K FAVIVON!!

A humidifier really helps my kids. Other than that I can't really think of anything.

My doc always has me give the children's meds in a lower dose to the baby. Usually a pharmasist can do the math for you. Jessie's a pretty heavy baby though, so we have more freedom with her. Hope they feel better soon!

I heard vicks on their feet with socks helps a cough. I did for both my little ones. I even tried it on myself and I slept more calmly, less coughing.

We use a nasal flush wash system thingy ... we got it from our ENT and it is fabulous. I think it is basically water and baking soda mixed, as weird as that sounds! I'll send you a link later today.

My son has bad allergies and his allergy/asthma doctor gave me a nasal flust system. I can look for the recipe card if you like. You basically mix it and put their head over the sink and plug on nostril and squart up the other side. The water can will come out of the other nostril. Then vise versa. After that you take the bulb and suck all the extra out. It is a pain, but has helped out a lot.
Hope that helps and again, I can give you the recipe if you would like to mix some up. It's basically water, tiny amount of salt, and baking soda.

I feel your pain my Little Wade has the same Clarksville Crud. He ran a temp the first day and screamed at night. We did the steam showers and the heat humifider. It is day 5 and we are much better! We did tylenol but nothing else UGH! I hate the cruds! Also Renee off topic but I wanted to let you know I am testing the DVR's from CDE and they should be avaliable in the next few weeks. They are working great!

Oh yuck! Isn't it great how they can't share anything, but an illness? I hope they both start feeling better soon.

As far as helping the baby stuffies when CJ got his first cold or was congested they told me to use saline in his nose. Maybe that would help. And of course the lovely snot pullers. Good luck keeping him comfortable.

What about mucinex or a humidifier with Vicks in the water next to his bed at night?

Apart from plugging their nostrils with tissues? No, nothing this side. Caitlyn's nose thinks it's part of some running event in the Olympics...

Here's what I do:

Give tylenol every 4-5 hours to help the kiddo feel better. Give 100 degree baths 3 times a day (especially before bed) and nasal syringe the nose after each bath.

Then, I prop him up on a pillow and let him sleep in my bed with me - just so I can be sure he's breathing. I get paranoid when my kiddo has a cold.

Good luck!

I always found a eculyptus bath did wonders for opening their airways. I know John and Johnson sells it with the baby bath products and often you can find a cheaper no name brand as well.

Good luck.
