Let me say right off the bat that Jodi Picoult is my most FAVORITE author - EVER! I've read all of her books except for her very newest one, but these were my favorites:
This is my favorite of my favorites! It's a story about a little girl who gets Leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. Her older brother was not a match so her parents decided to have another baby... and through prenatal genetic testing they made SURE this baby would be a match! Thus her sister was born, the older girl got her transplant... but then she kept needing more and more until the younger sister was sick of it and decided not to help anymore. I won't say anymore than that as I don't want to give it away, but this book is GREAT even if you're not part of the cancer world. I actually read it for the first time before Kennedy was diagnosed. It's full of twists and turns, a family that you KNOW is not perfect, but the parents try hard to do their best for all the kids, and it will leave you sobbing at the end. Promise!
Plain Truth is another great read! It takes place in Amish country in PA. You can tell that Picoult did an incredible amount of research on this book... as she did with all her books! In Plain Truth a baby is found dead in an Amish barn and even though a young, unmarried Amish girl was medically proven to have given birth, she denies ever being pregnant! Much to the dismay of her father, a high profile lawyer comes to help her with her case but is continually frustrated as she finds out more and more secrets that are being kept from her. This ending was a little bit predictable to me (unlike My Sister's Keeper where I was shocked!) but it was still a GREAT book and I enjoyed learning about the Amish way of life!
Nineteen Minutes is one of Picoults newer books... it just came out last year. It's a story of a high school shooting... the cool kids, the jocks, the kids stuck in the middle. It showed the terror of the families waiting to find out if their kids were ok and then the survivor's guilt of the students who made it. There's even a student with Down syndrome in the story. This is another book that made me cry several times and had several surprises... but again, I was able to call the ending... I think I'm just used to her writing style now! ;) It's a really, really good book for all parents to read!!
Perfect Match is another one that tugs on parent's heartstrings. The mom in this book has made a career of catching and convicting child predators when her own child becomes a victim. She lives out every parent's worst fear and even though she totally doesn't handle it the right way, you find yourself cheering for her all the way through. This is another book that totally plays on your emotions... and makes you keep a little bit of a closer eye on your own kids!
The Pact is another good one... 2 next door neighbors who happen to be good friends have babies in the same year... one has a girl, the other has a boy. They have dreams of their children one day marrying and are thrilled when, as teenagers, they begin to date. Their relationship is not all it's cracked up to be though... they have secrets, past issues, they're unhappy... so they make a suicide pact... except only one of the teens goes through with it and the other is left holding the smoking gun. Lives and friendships are ruined as this powerful court case unfolds.
OK no more Picoult, I really DO read other books! HAHA Someone bought me this book for Christmas and I stalled reading it. She told me it was great, but it just didn't sound like something I would like... however, it was GREAT! This book was easy reading and I got through it in a few hours. It had an easy to follow story line and was full of lots of different issues. It involves a young child named Lily who runs away from her father and decides to learn about her mother who died years before. She takes her housekeeper, Rosaleen, with her and they go to live on a Bee farm with 3 sisters... May, June and August. This book will make you laugh and cry all at the same time! The best part? I just heard they're bringing the movie out in the theaters! YAY!!!! I hope it can live up to the book though!!!
I just finished Dear John a few days ago. This was another easy to read book and a classic love story. It was a little predictable, but a good read all the same! John is in the Army but while at home on leave he meets the beautiful Savannah. They fall madly in love and promise to stay together until John gets out of the Army so they can marry. Then 9/11 happened and John reenlisted. While Savannah respected that, the miles between them became too much for her and she wrote him a "Dear John" letter to tell him she was in love with someone else. This story touches a bit on Autism, Military, Cancer and love... something for everyone! :)
This is the book I'm reading right now! I'm about 9 chapters in and so far it's really good! This book has a child with cancer too... I really don't go searching for these books, I promise! haha The focus of the book so far seems to be on the mom though, not the child. I'll let you know how I like it when I'm done!OK your turn!!!!

thanks for the inspiration & referrals to get me to read : ) if you can find the time...anyone can!!!! looking forward to heading to the Library!!!!
I saw the JP book in your hotel room when we were there, but never got a chance to talk to you about her. I love her too. Funny, I actually read The Pact when Em was a baby and didn't like it much...then someone gave me MSK a couple of years ago and I have read most of hers now...on the waiting list at the library for her latest.
MSK is also being made into a movie. Dakota Fanning and her sister were supposed to be in it but apparently she balked at shaving her head...now I think it may be Abigail Breslin?
I'll have to check out the others...seems like we have similar taste. Have you read "The Kite Runner?" Hard topic, but I liked it. There's also another author who writes Amish books...whose name I can't remember right now...but I started reading her after Plain Truth. I'm really fascinated by the culture...I think I could do most of it, but give up my camera? NO WAY!
I have my marathon site all up...just need Kenn's bio. Have a great weekend!
To the person that commented before me, you are searching for Beverly Lewis. She has a bunch of books on the Amish community and they are all AWESOME!!!!!
If you like "The Secret Life of Bees", Sue Monk Kidd has another one that is AMAZING - "The Mermaid Chair". I know you're not a native southerner, but Fannie Flagg's stuff is also great, especially if you appreciate southern culture. I read "Redbird Christmas" this summer and really enjoyed it. If you've never read any of the Mitford books by Jan Karon, you definately should. They're easy reads but have a GREAT message, and they're very entertaining.
I LOVE Picoult! I think I've read nearly all of her novels, and am anxiously awaiting a new one!
I loved gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson. She has 2 other novels that were also good, but the first one remains my favorite. Right now I'm reading Mad Girls in Love by Michael Lee West. It's the 2nd in a series detailing a bunch of crazy Southern women who are messing up their lives in various ways.
My Sister's Keeper is a very good book... I was so surprised at the end!! I love to read Jodi Picoult!
Also, I like Karen Kingsbury, Debbie Macomber, Susan Wiggs, Cheryl Wood. I absolutely love to read and so far my daughter enjoys it but the boys not so much!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Jodi Picoult, I was gonna blog about her books soon. Sooooooo good.
Hi Renee. I stop in to peek at your blog every so often. :) I just started reading Jodi Picoult books, starting with Memory Keeper's Sister. LOVED that book. I also have read all of Nicholas Sparks books. I like this post and may write down some of these suggestions. I'm not much of a reader, but these two authors have gotten my attention.
Natalie (babyofsix from ROA)

WoW! are we the same person? I just finished 19 minutes and the pact. Also LOVED plain truth and my sister's keeper (didn't love the ending though)
now I'm going to have to buy Perfect Match
You have fabulous taste!

I have read the dear John book as well and thought it was good. Though I never read Plain Truth I have watched the moive on the Life Time channel. I just finished The Pilots Wife and then found out there is a Life Time movie as well. Then I started the book Nights in Rodanthe and then ended up seeing the previews of the movie with Richard Gere that comes out on the 26th.
Have you read The Memory Keeper's Daughter? It's by Kim Edwards. It's about this couple who ends up having twins, and the little girl has Down Syndrom. This is placed back in the 1950's or something when Down Syndrom is looked down on. So, then the husband (also the doctor) saw that his little girl had Down Syndrom, he gives her to the assistant Nurse and tells her to take her to this institution. But, instead of taking her to an institution, she takes her and raises her herself. Meanwhile, the mom thinks that she died. Throughout the book she keeps seeing the daughter she wish she had. It's a really good book with a kind of sad ending, but yet a happy ending. You should go check it out.
Thanks for the suggestions. I needed some books to read!
Amanda
Oh once again, you have found a passion of mine to write about. I love BOOKS! I spend many of my days off holed up in the library finding new literature to enjoy. First of all I love great children's books and constantly read those to find books to give to my children someday, I read anything by Nora Roberts, Francine Rivers, and Jennifer Weiner. I also enjoy for biblical books or spiritual development Joyce Meyer, John Eldridge, and Max Lucado. I added all of the books you wrote on to my "want to read" list. Thanks for sharing your book loves!

Awesome suggestions Renee! It seems like we have the same taste in books. I'm going to take some of your suggestions. I actually have My Sister's Keeper upstairs in a pile to be read right now. I've been wanting to read it for so long! I'll let you know what I think. I just might also have to blog about some books I've read!
Oh, books, my favorite thing... I have heard a lot about Jodi Picoult and I am yet to read her books (so many books, so little time) but I will get there! Right now I am on a Janet Evanovich jag - her Stephanie Plum bounty hunter series. I blogged about some books a while ago I think... one of my all time favorite books (tough but good) is Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller about growing up in Zimbabwe. Just the first one that popped into my head but there are zillions of others!
Heather
Read thru your reviews and placed all the JP books on hold. Right now I'm reading Steven James' The Rook. Finished his The Pawn and can recommend both.
JP is AMAZING. I've read all her books except the Humpback Whale one. My favorite has to be Vanishing Acts, or Perfect Match.
I am a HUGE JP fan...I am rereading Change of Heart right now...I've read all but Songs of the Humpback Whale.
Only thing that I don't like about her books is that it seems that they each follow the same pattern - but it's a good pattern!!! (it's just after you've read approx. 10 books by her...you start to notice ;) )
I got to go see her speak when 19 minutes first came out...so good.
I might have to steal this from you!
jaimie
when ever we have to spend time at the hospital I grab a nicholas sparks book, because they are easy and love stories so I am usually safe from to much tragety or heartache which I cant handle when Kyler is in the hospital. Otherwise, have you read the twilight series? they are great.
Thanks for the suggestions! I have never read any by Jodi Picoult, but I will have to now. My favorite author is probably Karen Kingsbury. My favorite book by her is Divine. One of her newer books is called Just Beyond the Clouds. It is about a man who has an adult brother with Down Syndrome and Epilepsy. This man is struggling with the idea of his brother being independent. I have not read all of it, but it looks to be pretty good. I also loved The Atonement Child by Francine Rivers.
I LOVED Dear John by Nicholas Sparks - great pick. I also have My Sister's Keeper but I've yet to read it. I'll take it along on the plane Tuesday!! :o)
Thanks, Kim, for reminding me of the Amish author!
Like you, I have enjoyed Picoult's books (though I haven't read as many as you have). At the moment, I am listening to a memoir by Nicholas Sparks, called "Three Weeks with my Brother." I have thoroughly enjoyed it and now want to go back and read his books again (now that I have more understanding of where he was at when he wrote them).
Some of my favorites:
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Lottery by Patricia Wood
Mrs Kimble by Jennifer Haigh
Good Grief by Lolly Winston
Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani
Never Change by Elizabeth Berg
Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner
Thanks for the recommendations. I've been trying to read a bit more. I'll have to look for a Jodi Picoult book the next time.
I'm sold. I'd never heard of that FAVORIRE author of yours.
Another great read is MISTAKEN IDENTITY
I blogged about it here:
http://noreasonneeded.blogspot.com/2008/06/mmmm-i-sure-do-enjoy-rhubarb.html
I recommend The Lottery by Patricia Wood. It's about a man with a cognitive disability who wins the lottery. It's a great read! I think I need to check out Jodi Picoult now.
I love love love Jodi's books! MY SISTERS KEEPER is my favorite book of all times. THe ending killed me though. I just felt for everyone involved in this book. I have referred it over and over again. I also love Plain Truth. DId you see the lifetime movie of Plain Truth?
I've never heard of this author. I love to read so I'll be heading to the library to find one. I'm reading Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks. We live near Rodanthe and just went this summer and stayed for 9 days. They've made a movie and it releases this month. I can't wait!
Harlen Coben is an awesome author. His most recent book is Hold Tight. His books are can't put them down page turners!!! Others by him are: The Woods, The Innocent, Just One Look, No Second Chance, Gone for Good and Tell No One. Tell No One is also a movie now that came out in the States this summer in select cities. He also has a series about Myron Bolitar, a sports agent and they are excellent! In order...Deal Breaker, Drop Shot, Fade Away, Back Spin, One False Move, The Final Detal, Darkest Fear adn finally #8 Promise Me. And you don't really have to read them in order, they are all super reads. I have many other authors I like but he is probably my #1. Enjoy!!!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to read too! Now, thanks to you, I have lots of new books to search for and read! One question though....the book 'Plain Truth".....wasn't that a Lifetime movie? Seriously, I have seen a movie exactly like that!
And don't ask me to pick a favorite book or even a favorite author. That'd be impossible for me! I will, however, try to think of a few of my stand out favorites and get a post together.
I'm not much of a reader due to NO TIME, however after seeing some of these descriptions of these books and thier stories...I just may start!
I wrote about 4 of them down and will probably be going this weekend to get one (to start).
Thanks for sharing!
Rachel
Thanks so much--I am always looking for a new author to read, and am heading to the library now to find some of these good reads!
KAREN KINGSBURY...every book she has written. If you haven't read any of hers...grab one any one...you won't regret it!!
