The Starfish Saver
As I walked along the seashore
This young boy greeted me.
He was tossing stranded starfish
Back to the deep blue sea.
I said "Tell me why you bother,
Why you waste your time this way.
There's a million stranded starfish
Does it matter, anyway?"
And he said, "It matters to this one.
It deserves a chance to grow.
It matters to this one.
I can't save them all I know.
But it matters to this one,
I'll return it to the sea.
It matters to this one,
And it matters to me."
I walked into an orphanage,
A young woman greeted me.
She was adopting a little girl,
She was excited, I could see.
I said, "Tell me why you bother,
Why you waste your time this way.
She's only one of thousands,
Does it matter anyway?"
And she said, "It matters to this one.
She deserves a chance to grow.
It matters to this one.
I can't save them all I know.
But it matters to this one,
I'll help her be what she can be.
It matters to this one,
And it matters to me."

I love this poem because it speaks to me when I feel overwhelmed. It's easy to do nothing when it appears that you cannot make a dent in the needs that abound. It's easy to do nothing, but it is important to do a small part. Thanks for sharing!

Love it :) I created a non-profit foundation and we work to prevent human trafficking (slavery) and help those who are trafficking survivors. Our logo is the starfish...because of this story!
I love this poem. My mom reads it to me and my little brother a lot.
I love that too, in fact, I support a great foster home in China that goes by the name Starfish. :)

I like the poem. But as someone who has built a family through adoption, I have problems with the "saving" part. I didn't adopt my children to save them. Which could imply that they should be grateful for what I did. Adoption was the appropriate way for me to build a family. They were adopted so we could be a family. ALL children deserve to be loved and cared for.

Didn't know where to comment but I thought here. I just wanted to say how thankful I am that you share your live on this blog. Thanks for allowing others to read and feel like we are apart of your family. You have so much to be thankful for and I believe that you realize that. At the school I work at we all wear little star fish pins on our shirts... just litte reminders on why we do what we do. When I think of the word "save" I think that all kids deserve to be saved from the possibility of a bad future.. and if you can make a difference in just one childs life.. make them feel like they matter.. than your life and all the work you do is worth it
