Angel Matthew

Matthew Thomas Litchfield
August 3, 1993 - October 30, 2008

You've fought the good fight, your battle's been won.
Your duty on earth is completed. Well done.
You'll never have to think of these things again:
No cancer, no chemo, no radiation.

Thank you for fighting, for wanting to stay,
We know it was hard, but you tried anyway.
You gave up so much, we know this is true,
And you wore a smile, we're so proud of you.

Thank you for teaching us to live our days well,
To cherish our loved ones, we will always tell.
Your name will live on every day in our heart,
You won't be forgotten, you will never depart.

It won't be too long and we'll see you again,
Please get Heaven ready for when we come in.
Now take care of Cody and Charlie too,
We know that they will be waiting for you.

We will all miss you every day,
But we're so glad you're no longer in pain.
You've fought the good fight, your battle's been won.
The Lord is now waiting to tell you, "Well done".

Q&A #32

Thank God for nite time clinics.. is it a Centra Care type place or does your regular doc have after hours?
Actually it's our regular pediatrics office. They are open week nights until 8:00 and for limited hours on weekends. It's been such a blessing to us, since my kids don't seem to get sick during normal business hours! LOL

That's impressive. Do you even think Keeghan could do that? It was probably more memorization, but either way that's great. Have you contacted this guy to see if he has any tips for you?
Sure he could if I worked with him on it... but I'm sure it takes LOTS of practice. I haven't contacted him, but I know the basics of what to do... now it's just finding the TIME to do it!

I love seeing kids sign... it's so cool. But I know a different one for "cat..." guess I learned something new tonight. :)
I know a different one for cat, too. I was watching him and thought, "That's not right!" LOL

So she's okay moving around now a little without the neck brace on? I know you said when the first took the halo off that her neck was like a newborns neck, but she looks good
Yes, her neck is doing great now! She's allowed to have the brace off once a week for baths, and that pic was right after her bath. It was back on her right afterwards.

When did Kenn start wearing glasses....or did I miss something??
WELL I believe she actually GOT the glasses around March 2007... then she was diagnosed with Leukemia and I decided not to worry about the glasses. Kennedy's vision is fine, but her left eye turns in occasionally... mostly when she's tired or sick. They gave her the glasses to try to strengthen her muscle without surgery. So anyway, I started having her wear them again at the beginning of the year and then she was diagnosed with her neck instability and I just lost my resolve again. I need to focus on one thing at a time! LOL SO here we are... and she better not pull off another medical mystery to get out of wearing them!

How do you clean her neck brace? So you have to take it off to clean down in it?Yes, I clean it while she is in the bath tub. I just rinse out the pads in the sink (the front on is just velcroed on) and then use my hair dryer to blow it dry. I wipe the plastic part off with a baby wipe, it works great!

Those are the fun times! And I guess I've never seen Kennedy's necklace...I like it. Is it a safety thing (like a twist on the usual ID bracelet) or is it just a fun thing?
It is a safety thing... it has her name, my cell phone number and our address in case she ever gets separated from us. I've been making them for friends kids and plan on selling them, so keep your eye out! :)

I didn't realize or maybe I did and forgot that Kennedy wears glasses. I don't recall pictures of her in glasses before. Has she had them long? How do you keep them on her? Are the frames from Specs4us?
She did have them on here. Like I said above, I haven't been very good about remembering to have her wear them. She actually doesn't mind them at all, in fact yesterday she reminded me! LOL She left them on all day too, I figure they must be less annoying than the neck brace! haha The frames are actually from Wal-mart but I've heard that Specs4Us is very cool!

I started looking at the pictures and thinking - How is she gonna clean Kennedy up after all of this? So she can have the brace off in the tub? How long can she keep it off at a time now? Does she give you trouble putting it back on?
She's allowed to take the brace off once a week for a bath. That's it for now, but hopefully come January it will be more and more! She really doesn't mind putting it back on, I'll even tell her to go get me her neck brace and she brings it to me and lifts her head so I can get it on right. When we were in Philly they were adding more padding to it and she kind of got upset when they took it out of the room. I think it's become a security to her, maybe.

Woo Hoo to Kam for eating the corn! Can you post more about the eating problem - I didn't know anything about it and wonder now if that was my sisters problems back in the 80's. Thanks
Yes, I really need to do a post on this! I promise I will, maybe this weekend when things slow down a bit.

i am guessing you were an English major : ) very creative & good!
Actually I was an education major! But I LOVE English, it was always my favorite subject in school... besides boys of course! LOL

I think I want to have spg. for breakfast the morning you are here just to see this in real life! H
Hmmm ok... but YOU have to clean her up! LOL

I will be voting next week with the four kids in tow. I think it counts as a homeschooling field trip, don't you?
Oh most definitely! LOL You can make them write an essay about our government at work. Shouldn't be very long! hahahahahaha Just kidding!

Is Sarah Palin running for President yet?
Hmmm Can you imagine the controversy!!! LOL

BTW, are you gonna tell us who you voted for? I know, what a twirp am I ... that might stir things up!
Yeah, yeah, keep stirring! Although I bet if you were to go back through my political posts you could probably figure it out ;).

oh yum spaghetti!! isn't it amazing how it's cute when Kennedy gets covered but when I do, it's not?? LOL
Yeah... what's up with that?! LOL

I didn't know she wore glasses, how super cute does she look in them.. Ok, they are all super cute and hooray to Kam for eating Korn! (haha couldn't use a C now could I?)
Hahahaha Korn... that's just Krazy! :)

Very clever! I might have to "steal" that if you don't mind for my Election Day post.
I don't mind at all! :)

Will You Vote?!

Today I voted, yes it's true,
Today I voted, but will you?
Will you vote for all to see?
Will you help democracy?

Could you, would you check the box?
Vote for the snake or the sneaky fox...
I could not, would not vote this time.
How can I pick? They both are slime!

Could you, would you vote again?
Would you, could you vote McCain?
I will not vote, I'll take my stand,
I will not vote Republican!

Could you, would you vote Obama?
Could you, would you vote with your mama?
I will not vote for this or that,
I will not vote for a Democrat!

But you must vote by November 4,
After that, they'll shut the door!
Please go vote either here or there,
Please go vote if you give a care!

If you don't vote, then don't you whine
When our country falls apart this time!
No more cryin, no complainin'
No more yellin at Biden or Palin!

You should vote, oh yes you should,
Voting keeps this country good.
Hurry, hurry do your part!
Go on now and vote your heart!

Ut Oh Spaghetti Ohs!

Sometimes blogging is a family effort. For example, this blog post was Kassidy's idea. As we were eating dinner last night she said, "You HAVE to blog this!" And I thought, "She's right!" So I grabbed my camera. The title of this blog post is Kameron's doing. Keeghan's newest favorite thing to say is "UT OH!" over and over and over, even when he does something on purpose! LOL And the spaghetti part... well that's where Kennedy comes into play!

Are you pointing that camera at ME?!

I know! I'm such a MESS!

I don't care! It's SO good!

MMMMMM Spaghetti!!!

What do you MEAN I need a bath?!

Then there's my son. OK 2 sons. First the cute one. Oh wait... they're both cute!
OK first the little one:
See what I mean? CUTE! Even with a messy face!

Now the other son. You know what he's doing?! He's eating CORN... yes, off a toothpick but he liked it! (Hey Mikey!) LOL I was SO proud of him! I think he only gagged once. I did bribe him with an extra bread stick, but I never said I was above bribery! LOL He also said he might eat more tomorrow! YES!
OK... I'm gonna try it....

Hmmm not so bad!!

Look! I can make a K with my toothpicks!

Oh... did I leave someone out? Don't worry! She's way too attention needy to let me forget her!
See what I mean?!

Two clean awesome smelling kids!

He's INCREDIBLE!! (Literally! LOL)

Is she being a monkey... or a ghost?!

I love my kids!

17 month old with Down Syndrome READING!

WOW! Did we miss the boat here or what?! Absolutely amazing!

Pray for Moira!

Right about now, my friend Kelly and her husband Brian are checking in on the 3rd floor of Vanderbilt Children's Hospital where their daughter, Moira, will undergo surgery for craniosynostosis (fusion of her saggital suture line) at noon. She will be in surgery for about 4 hours and then she will go to the PICU and finally to a regular hospital room for about a week total. Please keep Moira and Brian and Kelly and big sister Maggie in your prayers! You can keep up with Moira and let the McNeely family know you're praying by visiting Moira's page. Thanks for praying!!

Just in case...

Just in case you thought life was boring for us, Kennedy started complaining a few hours ago about her ear hurting. I brushed it off at first, I looked on the outside of her ear and didn't see anything, and she hasn't had an ear infection in YEARS so I kissed it and told her to go play. About an hour later she was crying saying, "My ear weally weally hurts mommy! I wanna go to the doctor!" Alrighty then!

SO thank God for our evening clinic! I called and got her an appointment. The doctor walked into the room and said, "What brings you in tonight?" Kennedy said, "My EAR!!!! It HURTS!" That settled that! LOL So he checked her out really well and asked if I wanted blood drawn due to her history of Leukemia and the fact that she has a fever. I told him no, I'm pretty sure it's just her ear. He said ok but to bring her in if her temp goes up just in case. I'm sure that's not it, but it's nice to have a doctor who knows her history and is proactive! Anyway, he looked in her ear and sure enough, it's infected! After he looked in it, Kennedy said, "Thanks it's better!" And he said, "It IS?!" And she sat there for a minute and said, "No... not better!" hahaha

Anyway, we're home with Amoxicillan and hopefully she'll feel better soon. NEVER a dull moment!!

Dumb monkey!

Kennedy was watching Dora this morning when Boots asked what kind of truck was in the picture. Kennedy answered, "A ice cream truck!" (Which was correct.) Boots then repeated the question, "What kind of truck is it?" Kennedy then growled in frustration and said, "I SAID ice CREAM truck!" LOL Dumb monkey, how dare you ask her twice!!!

Q&A #31

Loved reading ALL the answers, but thanks for the food info. I think I can put it to work at my house...who knew?
Let me know if it works!!! :o)

Hey Renee!! Have you seen The Secret Life of Bee's??? I know you said that you were wanting to see it, but I didn't know if you have yet. I saw it tonight, and it was absolutely amazing!!! I haven't read the book yet, so I can't really compare to the book, but the movie is definitely a tear-jerker!! I hope you get the opportunity to see it. It's amazing!
I haven't!!! I so wish I could have but I don't think Kameron and Keeghan would have survived through it. I will definitely be renting it when it comes out. The book is SO good, you should definitely read it when you have a chance!

so? how was it (High School Musical 3)? is it worth the price of admission, or can i wait until the rental?
It was REALLY good!! You just have to be ready for singing out of NOWHERE! LOL But I guess it wouldn't be "Musical" without that! :) Kass and Kam loved it!

I LOVED IT! I thought it was the best of all three and I'm a huge fan of the first two. I'm planning to see it again. Did you love it, too or am I blowing this way out?
Yes, I really did love it! Kennedy loved it too! She pretty much loves anything with singing! I'm sure we'll be owning it when it comes out! :)

But i do need to go because i just turned my head and my 4 y/o is eating sour cream from the tub and i almost think DH gave it to him, not totally sure on the dh thing as he just left for work. We are at home and its dairy so would that be a home cooked dairy meal, lol?
LOL Absofreakinglutely! I just let my kids eat a tub of butter for breakfast, so what's the difference?! LOL! (I'm JUST KIDDING no one yell at me!)

I didn't know Kamm had sensory issues. Sorry, I sometimes only have time to skim and I mess a lot. *blush* Anyhoo, My 12 year old son was diagnosed with SPD when he was 7. We did OT for a year that included listening therapy. It changed our life!!
What is listening therapy?! I would love to hear more about it if you have time!!

How did you decide it was time for feeding therapy? Kayla eat like FOUR things (GF waffles, GF noodles - spiral only, GF pretzels, and bananas) right now. Gotta love that autism stuff.
Kameron was down to only a few things... chicken and fries (but he refused to eat "real" chicken, only the pressed patties), cheese pizza, bananas and apples, turkey sandwiches (but only if the turkey is VERY thin sliced), and things like chips and goldfish crackers, some cereal (always without milk), and his all time favorite PB&J. At first we took the hard-nosed approach of "If you don't eat what we're eating, you don't eat at all", so he wouldn't eat dinner and go to bed hungry. The next morning he would wake up throwing up. Without fail. I took him to the ped's office and she said she doesn't know WHY that's happening, but he HAS to eat dinner even if he eats PB&J every night for the rest of his life. HA! Try explaining to the girls why they have to eat real food and he gets PB&J @@.
SO a friend of mine had taken her son to this feeding clinic in NY and it really helped him so I looked for something like that here. They didn't have an inpatient program but they did have an OT who does it so we see her once a month and are sent home with homework... like eating peas with toothpicks! LOL She also gave us a chart for him to put stickers on every time he eats them. Like I said before, I can't wait to be able to prepare ONE meal that everyone will sit down and eat. (I'll leave out the fact that I HATE peas! hahaha)

BTW, I'd never heard of feeding therapy, or the sensory issue. This is facinating (I'm sure it's not first hand) I'm going to have to look it up and see what it's about. Is there a particular website that has good info?
I'm planning on doing a post about it soon! Watch for it!

Of course I HAD to try it (the Bubble Wrap game) and even knowing it was coming and with no volume (does it have sound?) I still jumped!
Ohhh yes it has sound. Horrible screaming noises. Stupid game. LOL

LOL--It says my hair should be brown. BUT..before chemo my hair was yellow blonde and it was REAL, not dyed. All fell out and came back BROWN! Ha!
Ahhh that's what Kennedy's did too! I miss her blonde hair!

My name is Kelly. I know Renee and her mother from Northern California. I want to apologize for leaving anonymous comments to Renee on these postings. While I am not the one to leave this insensitive message you blogged about here - I have left them. I do not have a "Google/Blogger", "OpenID","Name/URL" - so, I just leave it as Anonymous. I am very sorry to be associated with 'mean' people who do not think before speaking. I will try to start my posts from now on with my name, given I usually forget to "sign" it until after it has sent because I am used to my email automatically adding my name to the bottom.
Kelly, I leave anonymous comments open for my friends like you who don't have any other IDs to sign in with. This is definitely not who everyone was referring to... it's the people who come and pretend they are better parents than you and critize and insult and then hide under the anonymous postings. It's just really chicken and really irritating, but I'll leave my anonymous postings open so you and all my other friends who read here can still comment! :)

Monday Moment for Down Syndrome - You're Beautiful

Over the last 4 years I have collected MANY poems and stories about Down syndrome and special needs in general. Since a lot of my readers have kids with special needs, I thought I would post one poem or story every Monday. Chances are you'll find one you've never heard along the way!

You're Beautiful

Down a cold and darkened hallway
A doctor stood alone,
With a young and frightened father
Who knew something was wrong
He said, Son this isn't easy
But we really need to talk.
So he put his arm around him
And they began to walk.

He said your wife is finally sleeping
She just needs to be alone right now.
And your baby, well she's healthy,
But there's something you should know.
Son, she's slightly less than perfect,
And there's nothing we could do .
So before you go to see her,
I thought I'd talk to you.

As the young man held the warm,
And sleeping bundle to his chest,
He saw the imperfections,
And although he tried his best,
He couldn't stop the tears from falling,
As he held his little girl.
And in a low and trembling voice,
He gently said these words;

You're beautiful in every way, so beautiful.
How I've waited for this day.
If the world was offered to me,
I just couldn't make the trade.
Cause you're beautiful

When I think of how I've fallen,
And all the times I've tried,
To hide my imperfections,
From my Father's eyes.
There's a voice that still is calling,
Deep inside of me.
And I can always hear it
when I get on my knees.

You're beautiful in every way, so beautiful.
How I've waited for this day.
When the world was offered to me,
I just couldn't make the trade.
Cause you're beautiful.
You'd be amazed at how some things matter,
And some things don't,
When you're seen through,
The eyes of God.
Though we try to hide our darkness,
And fill our dreams,
He only sees what's in your heart.

And you're beautiful, in every way,
So beautiful.
How I've waited for this day.
When the world was offered to me,
I just couldn't make the trade.
Cause you're beautiful

I know God knows, you're beautiful
You're beautiful...
You're beautiful...
You're beautiful...

A Small Favor

I know a lot of you weren't around a year ago, but in light of Halloween I need to ask you all a HUGE favor! If you get an email with a "fun game" where the scary exorcist lady pops up and scares the crud out of you, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not send it to me. Please?! Want to know why? Read about it here!

To Ms. Anonymous

To my commenter who left this comment:
"Don't you think that running through the drive-thru right after feeding therapy is sending Kam the wrong message? I mean, he probably doesn't want to eat veges because he's so used to fast food. Apparently, he gets to eat fast food ALL the time. What's the point of the feeding therapy then?! There is nothing like a home cooked meal, with veges."

First of all, it's "Veggies" not "veges". Second of all, if you knew ANYTHING about Kameron you would know that it is sensory issues that prevent him from eating the texture of veggies... these issues being directly related to his sensory integration disorder. If you'd also bothered to read the Q&A you'd see he ate apples and drank milk with it. What's so unhealthy about that?! Also, if you'd bothered to have read the whole post you would have seen that with the extremely busy day I had there wasn't much chance of getting a homecooked meal. Do I like to cook? NOPE! Do I cook as often as I should? NOPE! But my kids DON'T eat fast food ALL the time and they DO get well balanced meals... except for Kameron who promptly gags and throws up as soon as they touch his mouth... hence the feeding therapy. My goal is to be able to have us all sit down and eat the SAME thing without me having to make him a completely different meal. I'm sorry I don't cook a full 5 course meal every night. I have a FEW other things to do with my time. Lastly, if you're going to insult me, feel FREE to leave your name or use my email. Only cowards insult others anonymously.

Did you know?

Did you know that in other countries all over the world, there are children with Down syndrome left to die? In many countries, when a child with Ds is placed in an orphanage, they are transitioned to an institution at age Five. Five. FIVE. The same age Kennedy will be in May. If Kennedy had been born in the Ukraine, or in Russia or any other number of countries, she would probably have been given up and she would be getting ready to move to an institution right now. She wouldn't get medical treatment. She wouldn't be taken care of. She would essentially be left to die. Most children who are put into an institution die within the first year. They'll never get a chance to go to Kindergarten, to celebrate a birthday or Christmas, to know the love of a mommy and daddy. Can you imagine? I can't.

Take a look at some of these beautiful, precious kids who are right now in orphanges overseas... kids who WILL, if they're not adopted soon, go to live in one of these horrid institutions... where they WILL die. Then go to The Reece's Rainbow Blog to see even more kids... THEN go to the Reece's Rainbow Website to see what you can do to help. These children don't deserve this. No one does.

Political Quiz...

OK take this quiz... it will match you up with the right candidate you should vote for... seriously, I matched with my candidate on every question except ONE! Let me know how you do!

ABC Match-O-Matic

Books: Part 3

I finally finished The Devil in the White City! Generally I am a pretty fast reader, but this book required a lot of thinking for me! Not only did I have to remind myself over and over that this was a true story, but I kept flipping back to connect the dots. Even though it's not the typical type of book I usually read, it was awesome! It was a great account of history and very well written. I loved seeing how certain things started... the Ferris Wheel, and where Walt Disney got his beginnings, there were many names that popped up that made think, "Oh wow!" If you have the time to sit and concentrate on a book, I highly recommend this one!

The Shack will be the next book I read... here's what the back says: Mackenzie Allen Philip's youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she has been brutally mordered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him bacck to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever.

Has anyone read it? Opinions? I will be back to give my opinion later! What are you reading right now?

What Color Hair Should You Have?

Cold?? I'm cold??? Fine then! LOL

Your Hair Should Be Brown

You are an intelligent, well respected person.
You are very confident.
You take yourself seriously, and other people take you seriously too.
You are a good leader, and you can be trusted with someone's life.
You motivate people well, and you command respect easily.
You are competent, successful, and organized. You can't stand chaos.
Some people mistake you for being cold, calculating, or elitist.

Then Sings My Soul Saturday - Apart From You

The instructions are easy. Just write a post on your blog about a song. It can be a song that has spoken to your heart during a difficult time... a song that brings back a special memory... a song that makes you want to sing along to the top of your lungs... a song that makes you glad... a song that makes you want to dance... a song that has inspired you... a song that makes you feel like the words were written just for you... a song that makes your soul sing.

You can include the lyrics or maybe include the You Tube video. After you write the post, go to Signs, Miracles and Wonders and link your post to Mr. Linky at the bottom of the page. Then you can read about all the other songs and stories that are posted.

Just a song of praise this week. Thank You God that we don't have to be apart from You.

Apart From You
By: Lori Loza

As I look back through the years
At the laughter and the tears
It's easy to see
That when my eyes were on me
I never found the good in things
I was never satisfied

Till one day I met You
Now a smile comes shinin through
'Cause you saw my heart
Broken and scarred
All I want is all You are
You have met my every need

Chorus:
Apart from You
I can do nothing
Not one good thing do I possess
But only what has grown
From the love that I've been shown
No praise is due
Apart from You

Wasted hopes and empty dreams
Had a deadly hold on me
But now what I do
Is bring glory to You
With all my life I've made the choice
To trust You and believe

Chorus

I thank You for showing me the way
Lord I'm willing to obey Your every word
I've learned as I live from day to day
To listen and to wait
To watch and then to pray

Chorus

Q&A #30

(I almost typed I'm glad Keeghan is CUTE. Well I'm sure you are too ha ha - that's what happens when there is not enough sleep or coffee...)
LOL Yes, definitely glad he's cute! :)

kit kats and almond joys and yes I do Renee,,,how about you??
Hmm I love the Sour Patch Kids, but I mostly just take the red ones... and sometimes the green! LOL I love gummy lifesavers too. Yum! And yes, I most definitely raid the kids halloween baskets! hahaha

Please stop by and say hi at our site!
Stacey, email me with your link and password again, please!

I read your twitter, about the nurse asking if Kennedy was a little bit Downs. I get those questions from nurses too. I even had a Doc., ask me "was she born with Down Syndrome"? Well, duh! She sure didnt catch it walking down the street. Actually, I dont think that's what he meant to say, but he didnt correct himself. Sometimes I am blown away by the stupid comments regarding Ds, that I get from people in the medical profession.
Yeah... when Kennedy was going through chemo my mom was talking to her neighbor who is a nurse and was telling her about Kennedy's Leukemia and said something to the effect of, "But she also has Down syndrome so her chances of beating it are supposed to be better..." Her neighbor said, "Oh. Well... was the Down syndrome caused by the Leukemia?" WHAT?! LOL

And what about the back of her head where the pins were? I know you said they were still giving you problems. Did the doctor give you any suggestions of what you can do?
No, I told him about the spot that still breaks open and he said "Oh really?" and moved on! LOL Not really his area, I guess!

Wouldn't that be nice to start weaning her off the neck brace ;)?
Yes! Most definitely!

sorry Keeghan is sick now. Same stomach thing the rest of you got?
I'm not sure... he never threw up but my mom said he was pretty miserable.

I'm a lurker around here, but I was just watching TLC, and there is a medical show about confusing medical disorders.. A woman had chronic diarrhea, could not find a cause.. Had a test done on her gallbladder, and it was her gallbladder producing too much bile into her intestines.. Well, that's the goofy version that I can relay to you.. She was put on some sort of medication, and it stopped.. I'm sure you have your plate full, but I saw this and thought of you.... Have the doctors checked her gallbladder as a cause?
Interesting! They haven't tested that as far as I know, but I will definitely ask her GI about it!

When will you find out the results of these tests?
Preliminary results show that everything is normal... so all that for NOTHING!

Does she still have the fever? Do they think it could re related to the test she had done on Tuesday? She seems to have such a high tolerance for pain so if she's complaining that much about it then you would think something is going on in there.
No fever today, I REALLY think it was the barium. The doctor said he wasn't sure but it was possible. Thank goodness the pain is gone!

Did the blood work rule out appendicitis? Just wondering as she had fever and tummy pain?
I would guess so. Her counts were all normal.

Is it another bladder infection?
That's what I was wondering, but they said her urine looked ok. They sent it off for cultures just to be sure.

Praying it's nothing major and she feels better soon and stays away from the H word (don't even want to mention it)!
OK it took me FOREVER to figure out what the H word was! LOL I read it and thought, "OK what is that?" And I thought and I thought and then about 3am I woke up and said "HOSPITAL! That's the H word!" LOL

I'm so glad to read that you went to Burger King for dinner. The blog-o-sphere leans so much toward healthy, home-cooked meals, but sometimes you just have to do the drive-thru! Glad I'm not the only one! :)
hahahaha if you ONLY knew. I will say we got the apple fries and milk for the drinks! LOL

BTW, I got your message on the carepage. That is so funny because I just told Tom that tonight....just not sure how?
Blogging is EASY!!! I will do a post all about it soon!

What were the tricks to get him to eat peas and carrots???
WELLLLLL OK so first the peas:
She gave him a few on a plate and also had a food that he liked on the plate (sliced turkey).
She always has a "spit cup" available so he knows that he has the option to spit anything out if he doesn't like it.
Then she gave him a toothpick and told him to stab one pea.
She had him smell the pea and then lick the pea and then she told him to put it in his mouth, chew it 3 times and then spit it out. He did.
The next one she told him to chew 5 times and spit it out.
The next one she told him to chew 10 times and then instead of spitting it out to eat a piece of the turkey. He did and swallowed the pea!
Then he stabbed 3 peas and ate them with turkey, and so on.
Basically she said the turkey was masking the flavor and the texture and counting the chewing makes him concentrate more on that than what he's actually eating. Having the cup there is just a comfort thing to know he has a way out if he tries something new.
The carrots he dipped in peanut butter, which he loves, and he ate them! (But I swear if I tried it a month ago he wouldn't have done it!)
Hope that helps some!!!

Today's the day!!! Kassidy and Kameron are so excited they can hardly stand it! I bought tickets a few days ago and in about an hour we will all be at the movies ready to watch. My friend Nina is coming with her kids, too which will make it even more fun! After the movie we will be heading over to the kids school for their annual Fall Festival. Candy. Fun. Games. Good times, good times! I love my kids!

QOTD #4

What is the most awesome sight in nature you have seen?

I almost forgot to tell you!

When Kennedy and I flew back into Nashville the other day, my friend Kim was there to pick us up. She suggested that I bring Kennedy out to the car and then go back in for our checked luggage. So I was walking quickly towards the door when this airport employee yells out, "Ma'am! Ma'am!!" Startled, I stopped and looked over and she said, "Why is your daughter wearing that neck brace?!"

It threw me for a minute because whenever we fly we always have to be pulled over to the side at security so they can swab Kennedy's brace and make sure I'm not hiding a bomb under there. LOL So all these thoughts raced through my mind like, "OK I am LEAVING the airport! What's the problem?!" LOL and "I'm totally going to get pulled into an interrogation room and we're never going to get home!" (Totally rational, right?! haha)

Anyway, what I actually said was, "Well she had spine fusion surgery in July..."
"Why?" She asked, "What for?!"

Uhhh LOL. So I explained a little about the separation in her neck and then she said, "I believe God puts people in our paths for a reason and I'm not supposed to be here right now. I'm never in this part of the airport, but my friend's daughter has something wrong with her spine and the Vanderbilt surgeons can't figure it out and they've thrown up their hands and are done with trying to figure it out, so you must be here to help."

Chills. Down the spine. (No pun intended.)

I told her about Shriners and Philadelphia and the top spine surgeons in the world and yadda yadda yadda... I gave her Dr. Betz' name and then I thought she was about to jump out of her skin! LOL She said, "OK thank you! Thank you so much!" Gave me a huge hug and just like that she was gone! I just stood there thinking, "alrighty then!"

I don't know her name or her friend's name or the little girl's name, but please keep them in your prayers that they find the help she needs. If Kennedy and I walking through the airport played any part in it, it's very cool! :) God works in mysterious ways.

Geez!

Did I really go all day without blogging?! I'm slacking! We had kind of a busy day today. After I got Kass and Kam up and off to school, I got Kennedy and Keeghan up and bathed and then off to Speech Therapy we went! Afterwards we went to lunch with my friend Melba and her daughter Mia, and then I dropped Kenn and Keeghan off at my mom's house and rushed over to the school to pick Kameron up early. Then we drove to Nashville for his appointment with the OT for feeding therapy. He ate peas and carrots today! I think the last time he ate those was when he was eating baby food! I have to try the tricks she used and see if he'll eat them at home.

After his appointment we ran to Mt. Juliet to drop a toy off at my friend Kim's house (to replace one that Kennedy BROKE the other day!) and then we drove home, picked up Kenn and Keeghan from my mom's and then picked up Kassidy from her friend's house. Then we ran through Burger King (YUCK) to get the kids dinner and now we're home, they're fed and in their jammies and I'm counting down till bed time. Is anyone else tired yet?! HA!

Kennedy's tummy seemed fine today so I'm guessing it was the barium that hurt her tummy so badly yesterday. Poor kid! Ahhhhh I hear whining upstairs... they can go to bed at 6:45 RIGHT?! hahaha

OK more from me later!

PS. Keeghan needs a nickname... Kass, Kam, Kenn, Keeg?! What do you think? Does it work?

UGH!

Well, we got to the doctor's office and Kennedy was FINE, no more stomach pain, nothing! So frustrating! Anyway, he ran blood work and tested her urine, everything was fine. I gave her Tylenol so her fever was gone, too.

SO we left, picked the kids up from my mom's and when we got home I sat her down to dinner. She took two bites, told me her stomach hurt and started crying. *sigh* SO today she's had about 10 French fries and 2 bites of pizza ALL day long. She's drinking a lot though, so I guess I won't worry too much.

We'll see how it goes tomorrow! I'm praying she won't have this pain again and it will just be one of the many unexplained things that makes Kennedy who she is!

Poor Kennedy

Kennedy has had such a rough week or so. This morning she woke up and started crying saying that her tummy hurts. She laid on the floor for about an hour just crying and holding her tummy. She started to perk up a bit and stopped complaining so I took her to Speech Therapy, we went to Hobby Lobby and grabbed lunch before we went to pick up the kids. She hardly ate any of her lunch and then she fell asleep. When she woke up she complained of her tummy hurting again and cried a lot. After we got home, I got her out of the car and she refused to walk and started sobbing, so I carried her inside. She can't stand up at all and her tummy under her belly button is extremely tender. She will sit up and play for a few minutes and then lay back down and cry. She has a 101.2 temp. I've given her Tylenol but it doesn't seem to be helping, right now she's laying on the couch wimpering. :( She's not constipated and we think if it were from the barium yesterday she wouldn't have a fever... so who knows?!

All that to say, she has a doctor appointment tonight at 7:15. (As if she hasn't had enough in the last week!) Please pray they can figure this out for her and get her out of pain!

Long day

We spent most of the day at Vanderbilt today... I don't know why I had it in my head that Kennedy was supposed to have a swallow study, but she actually had an Upper GI. After waiting for an hour and a half to get to the back for the test, Kennedy decided she did NOT want to lie there. They put this machine over her that resembled a CT machine which just scares the heck out of her. We had to hold her down, while she was screaming and THEN she had to drink the barium. As you can imagine that went over well. She had barium EVERYWHERE. Once she was able to get up and calm down she drank it no problem. They had to get several different views and since she has slow gastric motility it took a LONG time for the barium to travel out of her stomach into her intestine and finally to her colon so we did a lot of waiting and a lot of torturing :(. I felt so bad for her. We finally got out of there around 1:30 and she immediately fell asleep and slept until almost 4:00. When she woke up she wasn't feeling well and just laid around for awhile and didn't want to do anything. She didn't have anything to eat all day until dinner time, poor kid. Long, long day.

Keeghan seems to be feeling fine, but he was REALLY mad at me when I went to pick him up. He wouldn't come to me and when I finally took him he cried until I gave him back to my mom. Guess that will teach me to leave him! LOL He's better now though and keeps coming over and giving me hugs. I guess he missed me :).

Anyway, I guess that's it for the night, I'm exhausted so I plan on getting to bed early tonight! I have tons to read on my google reader, of course, so I'll plug through that tomorrow. :)

PS. Don't forget to keep praying for Matthew's Miracle and go wish my friend Christina a VERY happy birthday!

Question of the Day #4

What is your favorite Halloween candy?
Do you steal it from your kids' baskets?

Home... sort of

Kennedy and I are back in Nashville. We are at my friend Kim's house for the night because Kennedy has a swallow study and Vanderbilt first thing tomorrow morning. Seemed kind of silly to drive all the way home just to drive back here in less that 12 hours.

My mom said Keeghan is feeling SO much better, thank goodness. He's still pretty whiney, but no more fever.

Please keep praying for Matthew! I'll update on Kennedy's swallow study tomorrow.

Done with her appointment

Kennedy's appointment went well today. They did x-rays, which we expected, and then right afterwards she fell off the stool she was standing on! She kind of somersaulted off of it. Gave everyone a scare, including her, but she was fine. Dr. Samdani decided to have her neckbrace adjusted so it fit a little tighter, which didn't make Kenn to happy! LOL X-rays looked good but he ordered a CT scan too just to be sure. That looked good as well but she still needs to keep the neck brace on all the time. We come back here again the beginning of January and he said if things are still going well we may be able to start weaning her off of it then.

We fly home in a few hours, but for now we are off to take a walk and go to lunch! We're both starving! Please pray that our flight home tonight is uneventful!

Monday Moment for Down Syndrome

Today's Monday Moment is a little bit different. I want to tell you about this book that one of my readers led me to... The book is called Grown Man Now by Jane Schulz. Here is a description of the book:

Grown Man Now was inspired by Billy, a 52-year-old man who has Down syndrome. Although there is a wealth of information available regarding babies and children with Down syndrome, we believe there are many adults with disabilities who‚ along with their parents, siblings and community advocates‚ might benefit from a forum for sharing solutions, perspectives, and stories. Yes, you will find facts here, but we also hope you will feel moved to contribute your own voice so others may be inspired or even comforted by your experience and wisdom, too.

Jane Schulz became such an advocate for Billy that she ended up going back to college and getting her PhD in Special Education. She is currently touring Eastern TN speaking to advocacy groups and teachers about individuals with Special Needs. Be sure to check out this awesome website and book today! :)

Hello from Philly

Hello everyone!
Kennedy and I are here in Philly safely. We had a good flight and Kennedy was just fabulous! When we landed she cheered and said, "YAY We made it!" and started clapping. Everyone around her laughed and asked me if she was doubting that we'd land! LOL My friend Jen picked us up at the airport and then we went and enjoyed a Philly Cheesesteak with her and my friend Joy and her kids. It was a lot of fun! :) Now we are just relaxing a bit before bed.

I have to say, if you ever come to Philly you have to stay at the Holiday Inn in the Historic District. They are so awesome here! As soon as we walked in they recognized us and fussed over Kennedy, asked about my mom and the other kids and Frank and told us how happy they were to see us. :) It's like coming home!

Kennedy's appointment tomorrow is at 9am. Please pray it goes well.

A couple more things to pray for: My mom called and said that Keeghan is really sick :(. I feel horrible being so far away from him. Please pray that he feels better quickly and that he doesn't get dehydrated. Pray for my mom too that she doesn't get sick as well.

Also please please please pray for Matthew Litchfield. He was doing SO much better and now he's taken a turn for the worse again. There is a new infection looming and they're talking about reinstating his DNR orders. Go visit him and let him know you're praying!!

Q&A #29

Renee: I borrowed some of your Ds facts if you don't mind. I am trying learn about the condition itself so I posted them on my blog! Hope you don't mind! :)
I don't mind at all! Thank you for spreading awareness!

Goodness, Renee. I know you said the kids were bored, but couldn't you come up with something other than the stomach flu to keep them entertained over fall break! LOL
I know, right?! But hey, it helped us cut down on the cost of food! haha

Didn't you just ask at the beginning of the week what you could do with the kids off of school all week? I know this is not quite what you had in mind:(
Yeah, I was thinking more like bowling or the movies... but this way we didn't have to get dressed all week!

Hey, I wanted to forewarn you about a search I did and landed on your blog! I was searching for "awards Gabi's World" since I am so far behind in posting them, that I forgot who all sent me them. It brought me to your Nurse Appreciation Day post. Weird, but anyhow, just thought I'd explain. I thought of your posts on how people get to your blog and immediately got embarrassed. Isn't that silly?
OK this cracked me up! And I did run across it last night when I was looking at my sitemeter. Maybe you'll see it in one of my upcoming Google Craziness things! ;)

Where do you get the time? You must have a housekeeper and a nanny! ;-)
HA! I wish. If you saw my house right now, you would know I definitely do NOT have a housekeeper! LOL

So adorable! And where did you get the Blues Clues sheets? Sammi LOVES Blues Clues!
Hmmm I really can't remember. Kassidy was a Blue's Clues FREAK when she was a toddler. We had the most awesome room set up for her. I should see if I have pictures anywhere! I got the sheets then... probably from Wal Mart, knowing me!

What a great list. Hey, have you ever asked Kennedy for an M&M after going potty?
No! LOL I don't need her shoving candy in my mouth every time I go to the bathroom! LOL

Do you get to choose your kids costumes still or do they want to pick?
Actually they have been GREAT about just playing along with whatever. In fact, the last couple years they have started asking the DAY after Halloween what they're going to be the next year! I was like SHEESH give me a break! LOL

What's this years theme?
We actually have 2 themes this year, for a couple reasons...
1. Kass and Kam finally got a little bit of say. ;)
2. I'm going green. That's all I have to say about that. ;)

I love the wizard of oz one the most! Where did you get those awesome costumes?
OK you're totally going to think I'm being a smart butt here, but I SWEAR this is true. I got them at www.wizardofozcostumes.com. Seriously.

would you be able to post the html of this post -ok, you can remove your personal part lol - for those who'd maybe want to post those videos on their blogs?
OK actually, all you have to do is, on the first video at the bottom where the play button is, there is a little button that says "embed". Just click on that and it will give you the html code to copy and paste. On the second video it will give you the embed code at the end, I'm pretty sure. :)

Ceviche really?
MMMMM Yes! I love it! We used to make it ALL the time, I still make it for parties and stuff. It's one of my most favorite things to make! :)

And man I am so bummed that Kennedy didn't make it as a finalist in the bedroom set giveaway. I though for sure that I would find her picture in there. There were a lot of great entries, but I believe that Kennedy's would have been right up there with them. Weren't you disappointed?
I know! I was disappointed! But, oh well! Wasn't meant to be! :)

What's bi-carb mean anyway?
Basically it means that when Kennedy gets sick, for some reason her kidneys don't produce enough carbon dioxide. Here is the medical stuff for those interested: Click here.

So, when are the Kennedy wings of the hospitals you frequent opening?
I know this was a sarcastic question, but it really made me laugh. I'll settle for my own parking spot! HA!

When does your husband come home?
Orders say March, rumors say earlier. We're planning on March and praying for earlier. :)

I have been trying to get Kennedy's button on my blog and I can't get it to show up can you tell me how?
OK if you go to my blogroll you will see on the left side a row of buttons. The first one is Kennedy's and right underneath is a code that you can copy and paste. While you're there click on a bunch of other buttons too, they'll take you to some great blogs! :)

How's Kennedy?
Wellll she actually had a great day yesterday, back to her normal self... playing, eating, fighting with Kameron, haha then last night she fell asleep in my lap which I didn't think anything about, because she had a long night in the ER the night before, but when I went to check on her before bed she had a 102 temp! UGH! I gave her some Tylenol, her fever broke and it hasn't gone back up. She's still sleeping right now, but hopefully she'll wake up happy and ready to fly.

Today's blogging-
post 1: 3:45 am
post 2: 9:30am
post 3: 10:25am
post 4: 3:00pm
post 5: 8:00pm
DANG! You sure bounce back fast! I wish I recovered from ER trips that fast! =P Tell me, what is your secret? I must know!!! PS: I'm surprised I didn't notice the 5/10 autodraft thing! Darn it, you shouldn't have posted that until I brought it up! Darn spotlight stealer!LOL

LOL well, let me tell you... my secret to a lot of that was scheduled posting... All my Monday Moments and Then Sings My Soul Saturdays are scheduled like a month in advance, so even if I'm gone, sick, whatever, they're still going to post. The first update about Kennedy was written from the hospital from my iPod, so that doesn't really count, I had nothing else to do! LOL And the awards post I did while Keeghan was napping ;). Seriously, though scheduled posting is great! (Like this post you're reading right now is scheduled! haha) Sorry to steal the spotlight! ROFL!

Open tags, huh...blogging just has it's own language doesn't it? Memes...open tags....wouldn't even know what to do with an open tag. Are they hard to close?
LOL Yes, there's a whole new language in the "Blogosphere". LOL I REALLY wish I knew what Memes meant though... the only thing I can come up with is "It's all about ME ME!" Get it, meme? Hmmm ok yeah that's a stretch. Open tags are easy to close, just take the awards and fill out the memes on your own blog! ;)

It's DADDY!!!

The other day, the kids were down in the play room when all of the sudden I heard someone scampering up the stairs. A second later Kennedy ran in all excited and exclaimed, "MOMMY!!! MOMMY!!! LOOK!!!" She came over to me with her prized possession that looked like a small piece of paper, and said again, "LOOK MOMMY!"

"What is it, Kennedy? What do you have?" I asked.

Her eyes got huge and she got a big smile on her face and said....

"It's DADDY!!!!"

And we're off!

Kennedy and I are off to the airport! Please pray for safe travels! I have a few things set to post today, so watch for them later! I'll post tonight from Philly!

Awards and Memes

It's time for awards and memes catch up again! Ready? OK!

6 Random Things Meme

I was tagged by Jen at Rejenerations, Rachel at Love for 9... Our Blended Family, Lyndi at The Shupp Family and Lil Bit This... Lil Bit That to tell 6 random things about myself. You can read lots of weird stuff about me here, here, here, and here, so let's see if I can come up with 6 more.

1. I am a little neurotic about my blog posts. Before I hit publish I always round the time up so it ends in a 0 or a 5.

2. When I get really sleepy while I'm driving I sign the alphabet... thanks to Signing Time! LOL It keeps my brain working.

3. I love to shop on ebay, but I go in spurts. I'll go months and months without even looking on there and then I go on a shopping spree!

4. I'm a horrible cook, and I hate doing it, but I do make good ceviche!

5. When I get really tired I get very, very cold.

6. I can't think of any more random things. LOL

The Kreativ Blogger Award

I was given this award from Michelle at Elliot's Expeditions and Jessica at Raising Joey. I admit, I've been wanting this award really badly because, well, they know how to spell Kreativ! LOL Thanks Michelle and Jess!

5. People who move to America but refuse to adapt.
6. Abortion

I received this award from Lisa over at What Have I Done. Thanks so much Lisa!

I'm leaving all of these as open tags... if you want them, they're yours! :)

I guess everyone's talking about it!

Last night we were watching TV when a commercial about the elections came on. Kassidy let out a big sigh and said, "I can't WAIT for this election to be over... then maybe I can finally get some peace at my lunch table at school!"

I guess even third graders are even fighting over who to vote for! :)

Home

We are home... we actually got home around 5am, but Kennedy and I have been sleeping hard since then. Fortunately her bicarb levels were fine, but she was dehydrated. They have her a bolis of fluid and once she was feeling better she downed a bunch of sweet tea. They actually didn't have sweet tea in the ER, but Kennedy kept asking for it over and over so one of the nurses went and made hot tea with a tea bag then added ice and sugar, and Kennedy was a happy camper! :)

The doctors and nurses were all fabulous last night, they got us in ASAP and took a really good history and really checked her out. They checked her urine too since she had a recent UTI. She did hve some keytones, but they said that's not unusual when you've been sick.

SO now I have to catch up on laundry and pack for Philly. Kennedy is up playing in her room with Kass and Kam right now and seems totally happy! I hate it that when she gets sick, she gets SO SO sick. Thank you all for your prayers!

Then Sings My Soul Saturday - Depend on You

More Lori Loza this week! This song is from her newest album and definitely is one that speaks to me! I struggle a lot to depend solely on God alone. It's an active choice I have to make over and over, especially when things aren't going the way I planned. Thank the Lord He's patient with me! :)

Depend on You
By: Lori Loza

I don't mind saying I'm a person who
Really needs to learn to depend on You.
My eyes are red my heart is black and blue
From neglecting to depend on You.

Chorus:
So every morning, I'll depend on You
In the mid-day, I'll depend on You
When the evening sun is setting and the day is through
I'll depend on You

I'm often in a melancholy mood
I've forgotten to depend on You
I have to rearrange my attitude
Into someone who depends on You

Chorus

I'll be with you every moment
Each and every hour
I'll depend on You, depend on You

Chorus x2

Every day I have to live I will depend on You,
I'll depend on You.

We are still here in the ER. They ran blood work but I don't know the results yet. She is on fluids and is perking up already. Hopefully she won't have to be admitted. More later...

Taking Kennedy in...

I just got off the phone with the oncall doc at Kennedy's ped's office and he thinks I better get her in tonight. With her history of low bicarb, and the fact that she's so lethargic right now he doesn't want to mess around. My mom is back from Florida thank God so she is on her way to stay with the other 3. Please pray they can get Kennedy up and going again and that the ER docs don't give me problems. Most likely all she needs is some fluids. I'll update when I can. Thanks!

Buddy Walk Blues

Well, tomorrow is our Buddy Walk and it looks like, for the second year in a row, we're going to miss it. Last year, Kennedy was just a couple weeks out from being done with chemo and ended up having to go back inpatient because she got sick. And now, the flu... Only Kass and I got it and we're both fine now, but Kennedy is apparently now sick.

She woke up fine this morning, I gave her and Keeghan a bath so we could get OUT of this house, and after her bath she fell asleep... and she slept and slept, so I put Keeghan down for his nap and told the kids we would go after she woke up... well she woke up and threw up. Nice. She drank some Sprite and went right back to sleep and has been sleeping hard since Noon. She hasn't thrown up again and she has no fever, but I'm a little concerned about her bi-carb levels since they seem to fall really low while she's sick. That's what she was in the hospital for last time.

Beyond missing the Buddy Walk tomorrow, she and I are supposed to be flying to Philly on Sunday so we can see her surgeon on Monday! SOOOO Please pray she gets better quickly and does not have to be admitted. It's going to take A LOT to reschedule our Philly trip!

Two weeks until Halloween!

Only two weeks until Halloween! I admit it, I LOVE Halloween! I love the candy, getting the kids all dressed up, the candy, going out trick-or-treating, the candy, looking at all the other kids costumes, the candy, and hearing other people say how cute my kids look all dressed up. Oh, and did I mention the candy?! hahahaha

Here are the kids in their past Halloweens...

Kassidy Halloween 2000. She HATED that costume! LOL

Kassidy as Cinderella in 2001.
I loved that dress and we lost it in one of our moves.
Too bad, Kennedy would have loved it!

2002 The beginning of the themes! Doesn't Kameron look thrilled?!

2003 Beauty and the Beast... I needed a digital camera.

2004 Wendy, Peter Pan and Tink... aren't they ADORABLE?!

2005 Jasmine, Aladdin and Abu

2006 Flintstones... we're the Flintstones!

2007 We're off to see the Wizard!

So what are your kids going to be this Halloween? Do you dress up, too?
