So, I asked Kennedy's teacher today and she said they didn't eat anything unusual for lunch on Friday. Process of elimination points to the strawberries as the only thing that's changed in her diet. She drinks lemonade a lot, so I really don't think it's that.
NOW tonight, Kennedy went to the bathroom and when I went to wipe her I noticed her booty is BRIGHT red and raw... just like her cheeks last night. SO as the strawberries move through her system can they cause a reaction in other spots? Am I nuts?
So as I was typing this, Frank noticed that Kennedy's hands and arms are bright red now too and it's spreading to her chest. It almost looks like she is sunburned. She was FINE this morning. What the heck?!
She's had Fifth's disease before and I've heard you can only get it once and I didn't think it could come and go. What are your expert opinions?
Sorry, no picture this time!

Aiden had that happen once, minus the bum rash. The ER doctor deemed it an allergic reaction to something.
My step-mother is allergic to strawberries, but I'm not sure what her reaction is like because she avoids them.
I'm thinkin' it's dr time. Doesn't sound like this is anything to mess around with since it's spreading so quickly!
As for not getting something twice...this is Kennedy you're dealing with! And, for what it's worth, I had mumps...on both sides...twice. You're not supposed to be able to do that, either!
It sounds like the strawberries, I have heard similar symptoms before, but I am with Lynn, I'd call in to the pedi.
Hope she gets better soon!
With Jessie's reaction to every food in the world, we have had every rash under the sun. Yes, it can "move around" and can rash the booty. Strawberries are, belive it or not, acidic, which is why it would bother her down there.
Typically, fifths disease, from my limited knowledge, stays on the face. Once the rash appears, they are no longer contagious, but it doesn't come and go.
I hope you figure it out.
How's Kheegan feeling?
Hehehe, yeah thanks for not posting the picture of her red bum ;). I heard once you get 5ths disease you cannot get it again. I also don't entirely recall the girls getting the rash on more than just their face. Well, maybe their arms, but not their bum. Perhaps you should give the doctor a call tomorrow just to see what they think. Does it seem to bother her at all? She's not itching it is she? It definitely makes you wonder. I hope you figure it out.
I have no ideas for you but just wanted you to know I am praying for Kennedy!
Renee,
I am allergic to strawberries and anything acidic. I did not get the reaction until I was in the tenth grade and it was horrible. I turned into one huge red whelp! Zyrtec helps me out now, but I do not know the age limit on it; not to mention, Kennedy's sensitivity to many medicines! One question I have is, does she itch? My rashes itch like crazy! The more I scratch the more they whelp and spread. I will tell you cool bath with baking soda helps too. It was something my great aunt had me do that really helped before the Zyrtec because it counteracted the acid. Don't ask me, but I would do anything to stop the itch. I will tell you that the acidic levels in soft drinks will be an issue if she is allergic to strawberries. Citric acid is in sodas, oranges, tomatoes, lemons, and strawaberries. It may be that Kennedy has had TOO MUCH acid in her diet. You said that she drinks lemonade all the time. Is it a drink mix or real lemonade? I can have limited amounts of acidic things, but I know the signs of when an attack is coming, like my finger tips go numb and my stomach gets upset; however, my reactions have been severe and I choose to stay away from what causes them as much as possible. For example, my tongue has swollen, my throat has gone numb, and my eyes have swollen shut! Those are not good feelings. Yes, the rash is very hot to the touch and red.
I don't know if any of this helped you, but I will tell you that the doctors are usually clueless. They still look at me like I am nuts when I tell them about mine. If it hadn't been for my great aunt, I don't think I would have made it through it. She was my lifesaver. I remember her and my mother rubbing me down in wet baking soda, wrapping me in a sheet, and giving me Benadryl just to take the edge off so I could sleep! Yes, it was BAD before Zyrtec and before I decided to wise up and stay away from what caused it. It really is hard to stay away from foods and snacks you LOVE, but don't love you back. KC used to take the salsa away from me at Casa Blanca to keep me from eating it so I wouldn't get sick, because once she saw me go white as a sheet all at once in a reaction. One more thing, my reactions have gotten worse which is why I have chosen to stay away from the things I love instead of chance it. It's only my allergic reaction to acidic things, but it is the truth.

Sounds like allergic reaction to me, the face was probably dermal contact with the juices when she was eating it. And now its probably internal reaction from it being digested which "seeps" out to the rest of her skin. But of course I would call the doctor if anything they can set up an allergy panel or test for strawberries specifically I think. So you will know for the future. Also make sure its nothing else too serious.
One of my boys would react this way to orange juice. His poor little behind would hurt so bad that he couldn't even sit down in the bath! Probably the acid. I'll bet it has something to do with the strawberries or the lemonade or a combination of both.
Does your pediatrician have an after hours nursing line? I recently did this with Syd's mysterious spots. It was helpful to talk to a professional.
I have heard that you can become allergic to new things after cancer treatment. Not sure who told me that but maybe.
She hasn't had strep throat right? Because that sounds like scarlet fever looks..but I don't know without seeing it!! I hope she feels better!
My vote is allergic reaction. Scarlet Fever rash is usually on the chest and is different than you describe. Hope you find the culprit soon! Zyrtec or benadryl to the rescue!
My initial vote is allergic reaction. That said Jonathan got a similar looking rash the last time he had strep. It itched a lot but he had no fever and I wouldn't have thought of strep except I knew he had been exposed. Since you have a carrier in your house it might be worth checking out if it doesn't clear up. Just my 2 cents.
I think she is just like my son Kyler and I dont mean this mean or bad but she likes to give you a run for your money and get you that education. heheh. I always tease Kyler that if it can only happen to one in 10 thousand, he will be that one! ONLY because they are special. it sounds like the strawberries to me. Have you given her some benadryll yet?
Renee: I am thinking it might be time for a call to the ped just to make sure. It doesn't sound like Fifths because that usually is preceded with a fever, etc then the rash comes later. And it doesn't cause rawness usually. The strawberries should already be through her system. Hmmm. Wish I could help more.
Um, thanks for not sharing pics this time lol.
Sounds like a definate allergy to strawberries. My son had the same reaction to citrus. He outgrew it after a few years.
Did the dr ever call?!
Praying hard right now!
Psalms 18:28-33 For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God? It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.

I have no clue! Poor thing. I would think that it wouldn't be the strawberries after so much time has passed. But what do I know. Hope you get things figured out.
It may not be a true allergy, but yes it can cause reactions in "other places" my nephew couldn't have apple juice when he was a baby, it would give him HORRIBLE diaper rash. Poor kennedy, I have heard of strawberry allergies though.
Well, I and my daughter have various allergies and this is exactly how they present. Just so you know, different allergens can take up to a couple weeks to leave your system. There is a list we went by for introducing solids to a baby with a risk of allergy (meaning mum/dad have them) and strawberries are in the group of most allergic and most common so recommend not giving them until child is older (like 5). It is a government list so not just any old list.
And yes, it would show on face first, then on bottom days later. I use cetaphil (they sell this at Target & Walmart in the US & Walmart has a equate version of it) for baths and cetraben for skin (cream to apply on affected areas). cetraben is a mild white soft & light liquid paraffin cream - if you don't have that in the USA.
I don't think you should panic though. I would let your GP know so it is in their records for future reference.
Brooklyn is allergic to strawberries! I had given her some baby food that was strawberry/banana when she was about 6 months old (I know they aren't supposed to have strawberries until a year - but that thought didn't cross my mind when I was picking out the food) - anyway - the next morning she was in a rash from head to toe! We gave her benedryl and it cleared up fairly quickly.
About 9 months later we tried to introduce them again - this time with just an itty bitty tiny sliver of a strawberry. The next time she had a dirty diaper - he little bottom was raw as can be!
We have not tried them in about a year!
Anyway - my point in all this is I don't think you're nuts...Hope Miss Kennedy gets to feeling better soon!
It does sound like an allergic reaction. I would call the doc to. Hope she gets feeling better soon.
Renee, I have had many alleric reactions and mine always move around my body. They itch too and get red hot. My thoughts it an allergy. I hope she finds relief soon!!
If it's not strawberries, have you changed laundry detergent or bath soap?
I think it is an allergic reaction and that you should give her benadryl to see if it helps--if it is an allergic reaction, you should see a lot of that redness on her skin improve.
You're not nuts either, eating fruit that didn't agree with you, or eating too much of it can totally cause the stool to burn everything it touches on the way out. It happens to my son a lot unfortunately. The burn on the skin is a result of extra acid that wasn't neutralized completely with bile in the small bowel.
Hope she feels better soon!
I don't think I can help at all, but I did have fifths disease once during student teaching. I only had the rash on my face though. Lovely I know!!
To be honest, I think since things have not settled down, and it is coming and going, and because it is not something normal for Kennedy, it is time to at least call the doctor to see what they think. I personally, would be heading up and if they couldn't fit me in to the office, a visit to the ER might be the next step. I say this because if it is an allergy, and you don't know what is causing it, it could get worse than just a rash. I would rather look like an over protective parent than to wait and then have a reaction involving breathing or swelling of the throat happen and it becoming a real emergency situation. She is young enough that if it got that severe, she may not be able to express it quickly. Allergies are a scary thing, as I am sure you know since she is allergic to other things. Play it on the safe side, and go to someone that has the answers you need, a doctor. I will be praying for you all.
Our speech therapist's 3 year old just had a rash all over the body. She thought it was a allergic reaction, but it turned out to be Kawasaki's disease. The tell tale sign of that was peeling of the hands. It is pretty rare, but can be very serious as it effects the heart. Don't mean to be an alarmist, but our therapist had never thought of that; they did blood tests to confirm, and her daughter had to have an echo to make sure no damage was done to her heart. If it is an allergic reaction, the benadryl and the hydrocortisone should do the trick.
