I saw the one of the speech by the high school senior on another blog. He totally gets it! I am asking my husband, who is a teacher, to shere it with his class room today!!
Wow, that high school student has wisdom way beyond his years. Brilliant. In the second one look at some of the responses people had about why it's okay to use the word. Do they know how ignorant they sound?
Well, I did it--I realized I couldn't stand to let the use of the word go unanswered, so when someone on facebook called another person the "r" word, I messaged her privately and told her how hurtful my 16 year old with DS finds that word. I told her that I had messaged her privately rather than publicly because I didn't want to embarrass her, and I asked her to have the same courtesy for people with special needs. She'll probably just flame me. Oh, well....
Do you know after I read this today I had a meeting with the girls principal? I needed to discuss Kaitlyn and her reading difficulties. I'm still worried that they might want to keep her back and the principal was trying to reassure me that wouldn't happen since they strongly believe that Kaitlyn has a learning disability. Anyways, he went on to tell me about his "mentally retarded" nephew. I about fell off the chair. I wish I could tell you that I corrected him too Renee, but I didn't :(. I was pretty emotional about Kaitlyn and trying to make sure they are clear that I just want to make sure she is getting everything she deserves and it has nothing to do with me believing they are doing anything wrong with her. I think I need to point him in the direction of your blog though to enlighten him a little.

Welcome!
Welcome to my blog where I take on day to day life with my five amazing children: Kassidy, Kameron, Kennedy, Keeghan & Kellsey, and a husband in the Military. Join us as we face issues with Down syndrome, Leukemia, Deployments, and every day life with 5 young kids! You'll be in for the ride of your life!
Really, what can I say about ME? I'm a Christian, a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a granddaughter, a niece, a cousin, a friend.
My name is Renee, I am 32 years old, I am married to the Army... oh wait I mean I'm married to a Soldier, my hero. Same thing right? I am a misplaced Californian who lives in Colorado by way of Tennessee. I am a mini-van driving soccer mom... I always knew I would be! I am blessed to be able to stay home with my 5 amazing kids. Kassidy: my beautiful, too smart for her own good, funny, dramatic 12 year old who thinks she's already a teenager. Kameron: My high strung, incredibly intelligent, artistic, creative, silly, sometimes mysterious 10 year old comedian in training. My 7 year old diva, Kennedy: who will sometimes tell you she's Hannah Montana or iCarly or some other famous person. She's destined for the stars! Keeghan: my crazy, funny, silly, handsome 4 year old monkey who loves to ask me a million questions all day long; and our 5 year old magna doodle loving Ukrainian Princess Kellsey who's been with our family for just 2 years now. I'm so incredibly blessed.

The one of the brother is powerful! Not too many high schoolers would take the time to defend an issue like this! Good for him! :)
Wow, that is awesome! Great post!
The one with the high school student really touched me! Thank you for sharing it!
