Kennedy's meeting is over... Today was really just an eligibility meeting to make sure she's eligible for Special Ed services (which of course she is) and we talked about placement etc for Kindergarten.
She is going to be fully included in a typical kindergarten class :o). She will be pulled out twice a week for Speech therapy and once a week for Occupational therapy. We do have a few things to check into... I need to talk to her spine surgeon about P.E. class and what she can and cannot do. For example, I know she cannot do somersaults and stuff like that. If he wants her really restricted, she may go into PE with the Special Ed class, which is actually fine with me. I'm really worried about her injuring her neck. We'll see what her doctor says though and we can decide that in the Fall.
There's also the issue of her being able to carry her tray in the lunch room. I'm not too sure she can do that, she's so tiny. At home she will carry her empty plate and cup to the sink after dinner, but I wouldn't let her carry a full plate (heck, I just started letting Kassidy do that a year ago! haha) They had a great idea of us coming to eat lunch at school with Kass or Kam and just let Kennedy try it and see how it goes. She'll probably surprise me and do just fine! Wouldn't be the first time she has proved me wrong! ;)
The meeting went really well. I think she has a good team behind her to help her have a successful year. We'll meet in the Fall to write her goals for the year... and I really think that will be a fun meeting because they're not limiting her. I'm SO excited about Kindergarten!!! (Oh and I only teared up a couple times, but they were happy, proud tears, so I guess that's ok!) :o)
Thanks for all your words of encouragement, support and prayers!

Oh that's wonderful news!!! That's fantastic that her IEP meeting went well and that her educational needs will be met while letting her enjoy normal kindergarten interactions. That's awesome!!! :D
I think that the idea of taking Kennedy to school at lunch and practicing is great! It will give you an idea of where she stands with this skill and maybe some peace of mind. She will feel so grown up. You could practice later at home with carrying a tray.
When my second son was 4, he had to have his tonsils and adenoids removed. We practiced everything I could think of to make things relaxed for him. But I left out the part about taking off his clothes, and that is the only thing which upset him. Sometimes they just need to have the pathway made smooth for them.
Im glad it went so well.
Don't worry about the tray. Savanna is only 3 and is expected to carry her tray. They started off by just letting her carry an empty tray and then slowly added food items. Maybe they can do that with Kennedy. I think transition is harder on Mothers than the child sometimes. I think the lunch idea is great. Hang in there. IEP meetings are always stressful.
Happy to hear all went well. The kids in Carly's kindergarten class look out for her with such concern and compassion. It melts my heart! These kids are great with her. I was so worried with her going into a 'typical' kindergarten class, but her preschool teacher promissed me that Carly was ready. Ready she was! It's funny though, because she is the oldest in the class, but the smallest. The kids think she is a baby due to her size!! I bet Kennedy will be spoiled rotten by her classmates just like Carly is!!
Oh, and the picture of Kennedy and Keeghan is priceless by the way. I LOVE those great big brown eyes of Keeghans.

Have you seen the trays that Target has? They are about $2 and very similar to the ones the schools have. Let me know if you can't find them and I will get you one here! Raeleigh is about the same size as Kennedy and she CAN carry her own tray...problem is she doesn't always WANT to!
I am so glad she is going to be fully included!! That is great news!
Sounds like it went great. That was exactly what you wanted for her right? Fully included in a "typical" Kindergarten class. So I'd say it was a very productive meeting.
I bet she'll do just fine with the lunch line. Can't she bring her own lunch though? Do they have full day Kindergarten there?
Yeah for Kennedy! Sounds like the school is going to do a great job keeping her in the least restrictive environment. Kindergarten is so fun :)
Renee, sounds GREAT! We haven't had those meetings yet. We're just on the brink - regular Kindergarten registration is in a few weeks, which we have to do and I just filled out all the paperwork yesterday. The school psychologist will be visiting several times in Aleena's pre-school classroom in April and then doing her evaulation. I have an evaulation that I need to fill out. And THEN, probably in May, we will have "the meeting"! All contact with the school district was been very postive! I hope we have as great an experience as you've had.
Oh! And I KNOW Kennedy will be able to carry her own tray!!! :)
Yay!! I'm so excited for you guys!!!

Yeah for Kennedy! I wondered that same thing about Caleb, he is the smallest one in his class, but he has done well. Kennedy is a "tiny" though :) She is going to love Kindergarten!
I am so glad you have a good team with no worries, that is the last thing you need right now....unfortunately our transition isn't as smooth....In Meg's evaluation they referred to her throughout as him, his, James and Emily @@ (let's just say I am angry and they will be doing it again). I have not gotten the nerve to post about it yet because I am not thrilled.
ps. On a positive note, that doctor you are referring to 'Dr. S' was featured here in Philadelphia Magazine as a TOP DOC! Yahoo! I will scan the article and pic and email it to you.
Sounds like you're off to a good start.
I'm so glad!! My sister taught a kindergarten class and there was a girl who only joined her class for snack time, and my sister said it was like a celebrity visiting when it was time for snack! The kids loved her! Kennedy will do great (but you knew that). If the lunch tray is too big or heavy and she still wants to have lunch with her class, it seems like maybe there could be a rotating schedule of kids who would carry her tray for her? (The schedule would be to organize the daily fight over who gets to carry her tray LOL...)
Just YAY!
That's Great!
I have friends at church who are trying to decide whether to send their daughter to the local catholic school or the other school close to their house. Talk about complicated!
I love mainstreaming. I without question think children with special needs do better when integrated into a normal learning curriculum. I also think that her being pulled out for the extra help will be exactly what she needs to be successful. Yay for Kindergarten. I am sure she will surprise you, she's a doll.
How exciting for her to go to kindergarten. Oh how time flies. How nice that you have a great school that will help her be successful.
Yay for Kennedy!! That's really wonderful news!
I'm so happy it went well. Sounds like she'll be at a great school! And she's a super smart kiddo too!
HOORAY! how great is that!?! she will do awesome I am sure!!!! and yes, i am sure you will tear up....it is OK!!!!!
I can't wait to watch, er read, her amaze everyone!!!
hugs,
Meredith
YEAH! I'm so happy to hear that things went well for the IEP meeting. I teach an inclusion classroom which means I have special education students within my classroom and I love the idea. I think it is great that all the students receive the same education but with accomodations to make them even more successful. Good for you for being so involved and making your wants/needs noted. Remember that IEP is your way of meeting all of your child's needs so don't be afraid to tell them what you want on it. As far as the lunch room the school should be able to provide assistance during that time. We have paraprofessionals that assist students, or lunchroom aides, or even the teacher should be able to help if she/he goes to the lunchroom with the kids. I take my kids and pick them up from the lunchroom and have carried trays for students with broken legs or arms. That could be something in the IEP too. I love hearing happy stories of schools helping their students be successful and am glad that you are happy with the results. I can't wait to hear all the great stories about Kindergarten!!
Ok I cannot believe Kennedy is preparing for Kindergarten....wasnt it just last month she was a year old and wearing that sweet little hat in her pictures....she certainly has come a long way and been through so much. I have loved that little girl from the first time I layed eyes on her. I tell people about her all the time like you guys live next door....they could never imagine that Ive only seen her once in person (which needs to change soon).....I wish I was so much better on my blog so I could include everything....there are lots I want to add....kenn ..Kelsey everything....I'll get better I promise.
By the way....Sydnie was in preK when she was 5 and she carried her tray just fine.....yes Kenn will surprise you!
I been out of touch for a few day, so I had to go down on your blog to find out about the outcome of Kennedy's meeting in regards to Kindergarten. I'm so happy everything turn out great! Yeah for Kennedy and her family also.
That is such awesome news about Kindergarten! I can't wait to hear those stories :o)
What about just packing her lunch? Emily refuses to buy lunch so she takes it every day...then she wouldn't have to carry a tray...and you know what she's eating!
so glad to hear it went so well and they are so supportive of what you envision! That's great!
