DIET

In this post I told you all I'm going on a diet. I know there are probably a bunch of you out there in the same boat I'm in right now... trying to lose weight before Summer. And, you know, bathing suits *shudder*. SO let's confess, what are the foods that do you in? Is the problem WHAT you eat, or how MUCH you eat? What have you found to be the best (healthy) way to drop pounds quickly?
Talk to me!

I adore weight watchers. I find it really easy to follow, and I lost 15 lbs on it.

My problem is both. I can put back a pint of ice cream no problem. but I can also be realllllly good on my diet.

Renee,

I am a sweet tea freak. I am now using splenda instead of sugar when I make it and it is great. You might try it. It helps if you feel like you are getting away with something bad.

I have found it's WHAT I eat; not how much I eat. I cut out all soda, white sugars, flour, etc. I am eating all healthy fruits/veges, complex carbs, and no red meat; only chicken, fish, turkey, etc and some beans. I have been walking 1.5 miles a day and I have lost 22 lbs since February.

I find that weight watchers works well, their new program that tells you what foods to eat that will make you feel full seems great. I only have about 15 or 20 pounds to lose and have lost 3.6 pounds the first week I did it which was this past week. In the past when I did Weight Watchers I was hungry, this time I am not and find it is hard to use all my points some days. Between that and walking I hope to be back to a bathing suit and healthy weight by summer!

I don't think its either. I eat fairly healthy. We save desert for a Friday and Saturday night treat. My problem is being in school I don't get much exercise. Most of my time is spent in class, reading for class, or writing papers. I'm trying to get up in the mornings to run every day. I lost 5lbs but then I haven't had time for almost a week. This week though I will get out!

Eat a lot of high fiber foods!

Weight Watchers! You eat real food and learn portion control. I lost almost 40 pounds on it!

I cut out all fast food and soda. I haven't had soda for a year and a half! I also rarely eat red meat and drink tons of water and lots of fresh fruits and veggies and cut way back on carbs. I was able to drop 40lbs doing that. I think it works differently for everyone. Moderation is key. Really, if you cut out soda (even diet because the aspertame makes you eat more) you would probably see a difference. Good luck!

It's a combination of what I eat and how much I eat... but not in a too much food kind of way. I've been known to not eat enough period and then, when I do eat, it's not always stuff that's "good" for me. Chips are my biggest downfall, so I don't keep them in the house. One thing I've noticed... breakfast. When I don't eat breakfast, even if I'm not hungry until night, I eat more at night (or want to). So I make sure I eat breakfast in the morning... high fiber with some protien (usually cereal with milk and a hard boiled egg).

Add to that not getting enough exercise due to laziness...

I find the best way to feel good in my skin during the summer months (and all year 'round) is to accept and love my body whether I am at my highest or lowest weight. I eat when I am hungry and don't restrict myself or 'diet'(making healthy food choices and eating 'junkfood' when I want it). I also try not to spend time thinking about society's ideals of a woman's body and love my body just the way it is (and according to the BMI I am very obese...the BMI doesn't consider the fact that I am also very healthy).

...and I've never been happier!

I have tried weight watchers several times...it is great for most people but I am such a picky eater that I don't get all the veggies, milk, etc that it requires. My problem is how much I eat. My doctor said try using a small plate instead of a large one. I am doing a hip hop abs workout everyday and walking 1-2 miles pushing the double stroller :) Now if I could get rid of these stretch marks!

Well, I just eat ordinary food made from scratch mostly. I sometimes eat a biscuit or two and maybe a sweet.

But my MIL is trying to lose weight and she's trying Atkins. Now, William, of course, looked into it because he thought it was horribly dangerous but the Wikipedia page about it said it wasn't as bad as people thought.

So, he's checking on her each night to see if she's still okay and so far so good. No idea if she's lost anything - other than her mobile or her keys. She has modified it a bit. For example, after 3 days on it she had 3 muffins. I'm pretty sure they weren't on it but I asked her why she had 3 if she felt badly after the first one. She thought it would be better to eat the entire pack so as to not 'cheat' any of the other days. Like I said, not sure she's lost anything...

Drink LOTS of water! My problem is my late night snacking. I will be soooo good all day, but then once the kids go to bed and Dh settle down on the sofa to watch TV, I instantly feel the need to snack.

Good Luck. I joined a gym last month and I go at least 3 times a weeks, but I don't feel like I am accomplishing anything because I haven't stopped the snacking!

LaWanda said...

I must say that joining a gym has changed my life. I have three small children and before I joined the gym I weighed over 200 pounds. I found a gym nearby that offered FREE childcare while I worked out. I joined and within a year I lost 80 pounds. My husband was deployed, so, when he returned I INSISTED that he come with me!! He has been all the encouragement that I need to keep going. Although I have plateaued, I know that with summer coming, I will crest that plateau andd lose the rest of the weight.

P.S. If you decide to join a gym with childcare and your children don't care for it at first....don't give up.....it will grow on them. It did for mine and now when we don't get there for a few days because of our hectic schedules, they start asking when we are going back. :)

Good luck.....don't give up!!!!

Dang, you caught me with an open bag of chips ahoy chewy cookies and a big glass of milk. No dieting for me, I know it's only weight gain this summer, but at least I can blame it on being pregnant! :D

Renee,

Why not look at it as a change of life and not a "diet" to make it easier on you, or do you think that will help? I think the key is what you eat combined with moderation and movement. I gained weight while in school like someone else mentioned and it was from lack of "getting out there" and moving. I also LOVE sweet tea and use sweet-n-low so I do not have to give it up. I make a gallon of tea with 14 packets of sweet-n-low and a 1/2 cup of sugar. The whole family drinks it and no one noticed the change. I do know that breads and starches (like potatoes and macaroni) need to be limited or cut out completely for a while to drop pounds for best results. To get some quicker results and to look nice in my wedding dress, I ate salads with chicken and low or non fat dressing and plenty of fruits and veggies. I did start a strict exercise routine until I reached my goal and then I let myself do three days of "fun" movement" exercise a week from then on. For example, I made myself do one hour a day for five days until I reached my goal, but now I do at least thirty minutes three times week. I did not do Weight Watchers, but I do know they have it online now which is great for a lot of people. Whatever you decide to do try not to look at it as a diet, but as a change of old habits to new ones. It helps or at least it has helped me not fall back into my old habits.
Good Luck and God Bless!
You can do it! The kids will help you exercise! I bet they will walk the neighborhood with you!

Debra (Covington) Tuberville
PS If I knew how to do that line through thing you do I'd do that through that old last name!

I think it's actually stress that does me in more than anything because I eat when I'm stressed and it's usually junk. Hopefully things will improve in about a month once the wedding is over and school is done and I am finally moved into my home with a real kitchen and can be motivated to cook for both myself and my (soon-to-be) husband.

If you want a great workout, try moving! I probably sweated off at least five pounds this weekend! If you want I can probably find plenty of stuff for you to move in the next couple of weeks. I know, I'm a helper like that. Just thinking of you ;)

Good luck with everything!

Okay so my eating is not a weight problem but more of a nutrition issue and pancakes do me in! You know the ones that are microwavable! I will get a craving in the evening like I am having right now and all it takes is 2 minutes adn they are ready to enjoy!

My worst food is DEFINITLEY french fries! OHH how I love them! Oh and popcorn and fruit rolls ups. And Ranch....I eat it on everything. NO really...EVERYTHING!
I am lucky though that my job has me walk about 10 miles a day...sometimes more, 5 days a week. I also work out more at night. But If I could just give up the CRAP....OHH I would be healthy. I LOVE healthy food....but I also LOVE bad food too! SUCH a struggle!

I've been using sparkpeople.com you can enter in what you eat every day, and it will show you your range for carbs, cals, fat, etc.

I need to find time to fit in some exercise, however! The weather hasn't really been cooperating though!

I've been doing really good, until I ordered pizza tonight. Ate way too much!

Well I've lost about 20 lbs since this time last year. I did so by working out, at least 30 minutes of cardio and weight lifting at least 3x per week. I also totally cut out fast food and regular soda, I think that is what helped me the most I was eating McDonalds 5x a week on some weeks!!

Oh, you know me...doritos. :) This diet I'm doing now is really working. You are welcome to look at it if you want...

Oh my goodness, it's ICE CREAM for me! I had a deadly dairy allergy most of my life. When I was 17 I was completely healed after I ate some eggs that I didn't know had cheese in them and started wheezing. I was prayed over by a couple hundred people, and the reaction stopped, and since then I have had NO problems with dairy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE ice cream.

I'm lucky though because I also love and crave fruits and veggies, and if their are raw carrots etc. in the house, I will snack on that.

For me, keeping fresh/healthy food on hand, and keeping not so healthy food out of the house is the best bet. Then, exercise. I hate running/dancing/working out but I LOVE swimming, and since I work at our local pool, I get in free. Lap swimming for an hour 2-3 times a week has been great, and it really helps with both back pain/tension and my Migraines. Running gives me migraines because of the impact but swimming helps loosen all those neck/head muscles and helps prevent my migraines, and I don't twist my ankles trying to swim...it's a win win situation! lol.

My big issue is not excercising. Frankly I hate it and I REALLY wish I had the desire to do it. The other thing is that having the kids means that the only time I can excercise is 6:00am. Sigh! I am starting up with Weight Watchers again, I lost 15 pounds before the last pregnancy. I am only looking to lose a total of 20 this round. I'd love to wear a bathing suit and not want to run and hide!

Slowly scrolled down to get a glimpse of what people were saying and I say a couple of sparky fans on here. Sparkpeople is the BEST site! It's got everything!
I hate to tell you but losing lbs quickly isn't healthy and as quickly as they go off they'll come right back on. Like someone said above you need a lifestyle change. You need to take the lbs off slowly by eating less and exercising more and know that you need to healthy food. You need to do this for the rest of your life.

Stopping by to let you know I'm here praying!

Cookies do me in!! I also tend to eat way more than I need to.

What I found worked for me was sparkpeople.com. I wanted to lose 10-15lbs before our Florida trip last year, and this is what I used. I plugged in how much I wanted to lose by what date, and it told me how much calories to eat, how much grams of fat, protein, carbs etc. I started tracking everything I ate so I knew where I was in relation to the calories I needed for the day. Doing that made me aware of what I was eating and forced me to make better choices. It was a bit of a PITA (plus I had to be totally dedicated), but I only tracked for about 2 weeks and it helped give me the idea about what I was eating and I sorta knew where I was in the tracking.

I dropped 9lbs in 6 weeks and I was totally cool with that. The best way is to lose is slowly. I don't beleive in the low carb diet crazes...they usually end up making you gain it all back and then some.

What I also found was that drinking lots of water everyday helped me cut back on my eating and helped the weight come off. If I was hungry, I would have some water, and if I was still hungry after about 15 minutes then I would have a snack. Usually drinking some water satisfied me. I guess my body was confusing being hungry for being thirsty. Sparkpeople has tons of great nutrition info on their site. It's a little confusing and overwhelming at first, but it's all good.

Actually TODAY is my new "way" of life. After having Sydney (ds) I knew I had to get healthy and at my all time high of 244 I had the lap band and lost 89lbs then gained about 10 lbs got sick last year and was down to 156 which Im 5'11" so that was good but while in hospital my band tighten up and had to have some saline out (it can be tighten or loosen) its like a donute around the top of your stomach. any way since have that loose Ive gained 20lbs since Jan 22 UGH and hubby wont let me get it tightened so Im trying to cut out pop, drink more water. Chiro said to eat most in first three hours of waking then smaller portion at lunch then even smaller at supper. So thats what Im trying and to walk!
My weakness is M&M cookie icecream sandwiches could eat the whole box, but Im never to eat them again:(

My problem when it comes to food is portion control. I am really trying to eat less, and am amazed how satisfied I am when I eat less. For example, I always used to get the You Pick Two at Panera, and would be stuffed...I never necessarily gained any weight, but remained the same. Now I get a salad or just a soup and am fine. I did try the You Pick Two a couple of weeks ago and felt soooo sick after. So when we go out to eat I try to just get an appetizer as my meal or split a meal with Emily or something. It's amazing how big restaurant portions really are, when you really pay attention. A half burger and a few fries are plenty...and this is coming from a girl who can polish off a LOT of food, but after cutting portions, I feel sick if I do.

Exercising is definitely helping, too. I haven't really lost any weight in pounds, but I have NO pants that fit...I can hold out at least two inches on each pair.

I find that if you just move your body for at least 30 minutes to an hour a day and eat half of what you normally would eat....you'd be A okay! Dont' stress....your beautiful!!

Renee, I have lost a total of 100 lbs since starting on my weigh loss journey and it took about a year to lose at 2 lbs per week (a healthy loss)

People will say a million other things in life but really there is only one true way to lose and keep weight off and that is changing your lifestyle to a healthier eating plan and more exercise. It's all a bunch of math, burn more than you put in but put in enough that you can fuel your body for the burn. I don't restrict any one food group but I do make sure and give my body what it needs to survive and I drink TONS of water!

For me, I have kept the 100 off and still have 100 to go and I am sure that I will be able to do it. I am starting back on track after grad school as I just did not have time to give to the process recently.

The thing that does me in is not getting my work outs in because I over schedule myself! I am a busy person and I like that but it sometimes cuts into my fitness time!

Good luck! :)

funny you posted this. I am a compete food junkie. I want to eat all the time. I am not a big girl, but since having my last baby (at the age of 34) I cant seem to get back down to what I started at (she will be 2yrs old in july).

I started dieting 1week ago today. I hate every minute of it, but I am doing it!

I am eating cottage cheese (1/2 cup) & pinapple slices in the morning for breakfast, celery sticks at 10am for snack, a "smart one's" weight watchers meal for lunch, an apple or orange for 3pm snack and chicken and salad for dinner. I have not weighed myself yet, and will probably wait till friday, but I can already tell a difference in the belly.

My main thing that I cut out was beer, pop, and pasta.

Good luck on your diet, and wish me luck.

Oh and drinking lots of water! I hear that is the key, besides exercise.

The key to losing weight is eating low fat foods/ lean meats such as chicken, turkey, and fish. I have completely cut out eating any red meat. Eat lots of fruits and veggies for snack and at meals. Drinks LOTS and LOTS of water all day, hydration is so important and if you can cut out all coke products. It is so important to excersise atleast 30 minutes a few times a week, brisk walking, bike riding, elliptical, etc. Alot of people think oh gosh I dont want to run but you dont have to run there are alot of different types of excersises. :) Good Luck, I know you can do it! Perseverance is the Key!!! Keep us posted. Now that I excersise everyday I feel so much healthy and have toned up alot.

I have found that sugar is my biggest issue when it comes to weight. I focus on low carb and minimal sugar. It's helped me lose 50 lbs (twice). The first time it came off in about 7 months. This time (although it wasn't as fair of a game because the weight was caused from steroids after surgery) it only took me 5 months to take off the same amount.

Basically, I changed to diet soda when I drink it (cutting out the 8 mt. dew a day I was drinking), lots of water, wheat everything, and mainly sugar free things. (or the lowest sugar item that is available.)

Oh and walking (up to 3 miles) and the wiifit helped me as well!!!

Good luck on your diet!!!

Hello!!?? You should totally do the "Special K" diet!! It was meant to be :) You eat the cereal or waffles for two meals and then have a regular dinner. It is supposed to work, I am going to try it out this week.

I blogged many times about Michelle's OHM (one hot mama) diet. She told her readers to count calories. So I started doing that for the first time ever. I have been trying to lose 5 pounds since 2002...those last baby pounds. I even bought a pair of pants that would have fit if I dropped that weight. I wore them for the 1st time on Sat. when Jeannette & I went to the Melting Pot. I have lost 15 pounds since August. How? LOTS OF PRAYERS AND PATIENCE.

http://theresakrier.blogspot.com/search?q=ohm

or just search OHM. I honestly can't believe I lost the weight! I am 41 and weigh the same I did when I got married in 1996

I'm definitely on eating bad stuff side. I'm pretty good on portion, but love ice cream, chocolate, sweets, desserts...I could go on and on. I'm giving away a Weight Watchers subscription at http://www.melsboxofchocolates.com/2009/04/momentum-wwalk-it-program-lets-walk.html so come on by to sign up!!
