Letter confusion...

Kameron still has trouble pronouncing his Rs. It's been this way since he learned how to talk, and I figured he will probably grow out of it, so I never really gave it much thought. About a week ago we were on our way home from school when Kameron said:

Kam: You know what I'm wondering about, Mom?

Me: What, Kam?

Kam: Why do R and W make the same sound?

Me: Uhhh... they actually DON'T make the same sound buddy.

Kam: Oh.

Then he sat there very confused. Apparently he hears them the same way. I tried to make the sounds and show him the difference, but I don't think he got it. Oh well, maybe someday! LOL

That's so funny! I'm sure one day he will hear the difference!

Karly has the same problem. Actually, hers might be more R & L. It's hard for her to write, because she doesn't hear the R in words. She has gotten much better about saying them in words she knows. Lots of practice.

That's good that he notices.
Cute too.
I have been told by our speech therapists not to worry about the "r" sound until they hit 3rd grade....

Thats hilarious! Sometime, in your Q & A Blog, could you explain Kamerons Autism? I know you've said its mild before, and you've also mentioned his eating issues. I work in an autistic classroom and the subject is close to my heart!

Interesting that he knows there are two different letters but they sound the same to him...how could you even try to fix something like that? If he doesn't hear it, he doesn't hear it!

You know, that's really kinda fascinating. I wonder why the R is so difficult for many kids to say? I persoanlly think w and r sound totally different, butwhat do I know. LOL. English is such an odd language.

If he doesn't out grow it, he can move to Rhode Island. They (okay, we) don't pronounce "R"s. LOL!

Huh, he's had speech therapy before too right? You know Kaitlyn suddenly has started saying her r's like w's. Actually she's picked up a very strange way of talking that's driving me nuts. I can't figure out why. Oh well. That's cute that he said that though. If you ever see the school ST she might enjoy hearing this story. She also might want to do a quick eval if she hasn't already ;).

Ryan just started speech...he can do the R's at the beginning of words, but not in the middle. He's also working on L's and TH's.

Couldn't hurt to have him evaluated...especially if it takes as long to do anything as it does here (we're short-staffed in the speech department).

BTW, when are you guys coming up again? LMK if you need a pickup, place to stay, etc.

Ah...but R and W sound the same in words that begin with WR. And...words that begin with WR have something in common...they all have to do with twisting. That's a good spelling tool to remember. If the word begins with the /r/ sound and it has something to do with twisting it is spelled wr, not r.

ie
write
wretch
wrestle
wrench
wrist

I had the same problem with my Rs when I was a kid. In Kindergarten I remember being so upset when I spelled Wabbit wrong. I was sure it started with a "w". Don't worry, I grew out of it.

Daniel had problems with "Y" and "L". His toy lamb was Yammy. And the color Yellow was Lellow. Cute.

Don't stress about R until at least 2nd grade. That's the rule of thumb I go by. It's great that he's now aware that he says R and W the same... and if he can hear that you make the sounds differently (even if he doesn't), that's another great step.

R's are a tricky sound, which is why we SLPs don't stress about them too much until 2nd grade, if not later.

I didn't have trouble hearing the difference, but I did have trouble with the r sound coming out as a w sound. I had to have speech therapy for it when I was young. I can still remember having to put a spoon in my mouth upside down, and wrapping my tongue around it to get the sound correct. That is how they taught me to sound the r correctly. I don't remember which grade I was in when I had speech therapy for it, I am a navy brat and was in 7 schools by the time we moved here to Hohenwald, TN in the 5th grade. But I know it was before the 5th grade. Oh well, just thought I would share. I am sure eventually he will get it.

My daughter pronounced CAR as "caw", just like a New Yorker (except we live in So Cal.). Imagine my surprise when in kindergarten she spelled it C-A-W ! ! !
p.s. She outgrew it.
