The first day of the rest of his life

At Keeghan's well child check the following conversation took place:

Nurse: How is he eating?

Me: Great!

Nurse: Is he sleeping through the night?

Me: No.

Nurse: No?

Me: No. *sigh* He still wakes up a few times a night. Screaming. For his pacifier. Once someone gives it to him he will go back to sleep.

Nurse makes note of this.

The doctor comes in and we make small talk (because we're there so much we're old friends by now) and then she checks out all the info the nurse entered into the computer.

Doctor: OH Renee! He's still waking up several times a night?!

Me: *sigh* Yes.

Doctor: You know what you have to do, right?

Me: *sigh* Yes.

Doctor: The paci has to go.

Insert dramatic music here

Me: But but but THEN what will I do when he wakes up SCREAMING in the middle of the night?!

Doctor: You're going to have a hellish week or so.

Me: Can't he just take it to college?

Doctor: No!

Me: *sigh*

******************************************************

Fast forward to today. The plan? Phase 1: The paci stays in the crib. Keeghan wakes up.

Keeghan: Mommy? Where ARE you???

Me: I'm coming Keeghan... (walk into his room) good morning! Are you awake?

Keeghan: YES! I got paci!

Me: Yes you do... why don't we leave your paci right here... and here, take your Jojo (the clown) and let's go eat breakfast.

Keeghan: PACI!!!

Me: Do you want cereal?

Keeghan: PACI!!!

Me: How about some grapes?

Keeghan: NO! PACI!!!

I got him to sit down and eat cereal and grapes, but can you see the tear in his eye? *sniff*

As soon as he finished he ran to the stairs...

Me: Where are you going?

Keeghan: Paci!!!

Me: How about some juice?

Keeghan: Paci?

Frank: Come on Keeghan, let's change your diaper and then we'll get you some juice.

Keeghan: (getting a little teary) Paci????

Frank: Diaper first.

Then he changed his diaper, got him some juice and THEN he got distracted! So maybe?!?! *sniff* Poor Keeghan. It's hard to grow up.

Poor guy, he will get over it! :) I only let my twins have theirs in their bed at like 18 months, then on their 2nd birthday they went bye bye! I think once he isnt taking it everywhere with him it will be much easier to take away. Good luck!!

awww. I used to sleep with one in my mouth, one in each hand and extras in my bed. lol. My parents had this whole elaborate thing about how the baby animals at the zoo needed my papas and my bottles. so we went and i left them for the baby animals.

poor Keeghan!

I am so not ready for that yet. I hope it goes as smooth as possible. It is sooo nice to have it to quiet them during some situations but the waking up at night is hard. ((hugs))

I took my youngest to the store and let him buy anthing he wanted withing reason and budget but he had to pay for it with his paci. It took him a couple of days to decide that was what he wanted to do, but he did and no more paci. I clued the Toys R Us clerk in of course on what was going on as he paid with his paci.

Worked for us!!

Awww...poor guy!

When my kids were babies I tried soooo hard to get them to use a paci, and they just wouldn't. Nolan lasted a week or two, Kaia maybe a month before she started gagging on it, and Pierce had it for a few months, but was never totally into it. It drove me nuts because *I* became their paci. BUT...it's at times like this (what you're going through) that I am sooooo thankful they didn't get hooked...my almost 7 year old would probably still have one if he got hooked! LOL! I'm too weak in that regard.

Good luck to you. Hope it's an easy transition for ALL of you.

You are stronger than me, when our doc told us to take Jessie's away, I bought more. I caouldn't stnad the thought of her loosing her comfort! But, she DOES sleep through the night, lol. I hope it goes smoothly for you ;)

Aww Renee, that's tough stuff! I have heard that cutting a tiny slit in the end of the paci, and then slowly cutting a tiny bit more away each day makes it no longer "any good" and it is maybe a kind way to wean him of it? Good luck!

hope it goes well. what natali said is what we did. i just cut a slit in it and amelya got mad because it was broke. i didn't keep cutting it though. she quit using it because it was broke and actually she threw it away. :0)

Well, Kayla's five and still has her binky. She just has so many challenges with the dual dx that I just don't have the heart to make her give up one of the very few things she loves and soothes her. Am I a bad mommy?

We took my daughter to the Build a Bear store and let her put her favorite one inside it. She could still sleep with it or carry it around, just not in her mouth. Now, 3 years later it is still in the bear, I do NOT want to see it!

UGH! When Noah was 14 months, and I was due any day with Tyler, I decided to get rid of his paci. He had that big huge ugly playtex one (you've probably never seen it, since I'm much older than you. LOL) Anyway, Noah was very into "broken" things, and throwing "broken" things in the garbage. So I went around and cut the tips off all his paci's. He'd put them in his mouth, then try to plug them with his finger, then come telling me they were "boken mommy. Boken!" and would shove them in his pocket. LOL The first night I think he woke up every 15 minutes reaching for it. The second night was only about 6 times, and the 3rd night he slept through the night!

My oldest had a pacifier... we finally told him we had to give it to Barney ( yes Barney) to give to a sick kid.... It actually worked !!! Hayley was really really really attached to her blankie... so we told her it went to the moon ... .LOL

just a little positive note my youngest did 2 night without a "paci" (hers weren't the cool one with animals that Keeghan has but they glowed in the dark) and never went back so maybe you will get lucky and it will only take you two night. They weren't easy two night but we all made it thru hope you do also.

Awww, poor little guy. I keep trying to do that here, but someone else keeps giving into CJ's cries. Sigh, not good. Good luck. I know a lot of people use a pacifier fairy to get rid of the paci. Maybe that will work with Keeghan. The fairy comes and takes the paci to the babies and leaves him a big boy toy.

((sad sigh)) Growing up is so hard to do!

I remember when my niece was his age, and one day that paci just "suddenly disappeared" (according to her Daddy! LOL) And the bottle also just "suddenly disappeared.

AWW!!!! Olivia has 4 in her bed. One paci in her mouth and the other 3 she keeps in a pile under her chest. I don't know how she can sleep on top of them!

I've always meant to tell you how similar we have it with our little boys! Your Keeghan and my Carter are VERY close in age... (Carter was born 4-13-07) and as you've described Keeghan in some posts, it could very well have been me describing Carter! When I read this paci post, I just LAUGHED! It is TOTALLY US! Same paci and everything -- (he was never lucky enough to get a wubbanub from us though!) We're going to try to keep the paci to "sleepy times" -- naptime and bedtime -- for awhile and see how he does. I hope we can wean him off of it with few tears! Good luck to you!!

I had to do this with nursing in the middle of the night. Anna was still waking up several times a night wanting to nurse (no paci for us). She was about eighteen months then. I cut her down to once or twice a night, then cut her off completely. Honestly I don't remember that 'week or so'. Maybe because I was so sleep deprived? LOL. xD

Oh poor Keeghan and his little tear. :( He'll get over it and you'll all get better rest. Good luck to you! :) *hugs*

Wait. Not 'completely' completely. Just completely during the night and once a day after that until we *recently* weaned about a month or two ago. :)
