Ellen on American Idol?

So I'm a HUGE American Idol fan, if you didn't know already. I look forward to January when the season starts and I look forward to May when the winner is announced. I pick my favorites early and get MAD when they get voted off. I vote... sometimes. Not a lot, because I usually record the show and watch it later, but sometimes I do vote for my favs.

Anyway, I wasn't sure how I felt about Paula leaving the show. Now Frank just told me Ellen Degeneres is taking her place. REALLY not sure how I feel about that. She makes me laugh, for sure! But what's her musical background? And how is she going to get along with Simon? It's going to be an interesting season!!

What do you all think? Are you glad to see Paula go? Do you think Ellen was a good choice?

I wish they kept Paula, dumped Kara and added Ellen. Kara makes me want to puke.

Actually, if anyone should be questioned about "music backround" its Randy. He never gets beyond "little pitchy."
and to call a "music producer" a musician is like calling a candy striper a doctor.

I think Ellen will add real spark.

I do agree that Kara needs to be trown to the dogs...or the peanut gallery for all the insight *she* gives

Ellen Degenerate makes her way into certain areas where she doesn't belong. And one of those is music!

You know, its hard for me. I love Paula, just because I grew up dancing with her. I love Ellen, her show is the funniest ever, and I usually am on the floor laughing. But I'm not sure of how she'll be as a judge. Your right, whats her musical background? It will definitely be interesting.

I have never watched even a part of one episode...but I'll watch now. Just for Ellen. She is one of my favorite people. I don't really think you have to have a musical background to know what sounds good. I mean...I know good music when I hear it! Don't you all?

That will DEFINITELY be entertaining, good or bad. Paula was annoying me like crazy.

I plead the 5th...don't watch, don't care, don't come get me for saying that!

Ellen is smart, so she can probably come up with some useful advice. She's not going to let Simon walk all over her and she's hilarious. Her fun, energetic personality will likely be a boost for the show and should more than make up for what she lacks in the music background category. Just sayin.

I LOVE Ellen and I think she'll make a great addition to the show. She's hilarious and I think the back & forth between her & Simon will provide for some great entertainment!

I think Ellen's background in music is irrelevant. As most people pick their faves without having a musical background, she will be pretty much there to judge that extra something that distinguishes a great singer from an American Idol.

I don't watch American Idol (I may be the only person in the US who doesn't though as everyone I know does watch it). I did wonder why they picked Ellen though as she has no musical background that I knew of. She is funny though and will draw lots of viewers as she is really popular. I wonder, will she dance at the beginning of each show?

Renee...I am with you on all counts...love American Idol...unsure of how I feel about Paula leaving...think Ellen is hilarious...but WHAT does she REALLY know about music...she loves it...she LOVES to dance...but I am unsure of her expertise this area?

This is the first I have heard of this...I must think on this!

I think Ellen is a riot! I'm a huge fan of hers. I don't think this is her area though.

I'm a Paula fan. We'll miss her here at my house. She and Simon kind of made that show.

I can not stand Kara. I wish she would have left. I much preferred the original three judges.

ok...was just reading through some comments, and i had to say that...

i don't think you necessarily have to have a music background to be a judge on that show. i don't have a music background, yet, it's people like me who vote for, and ultimately (unless it's rigged) vote for the winners.

it's average people without music background buying the records...why not let one be a judge on the show.

just my two cents, and it's prolly not even worth that!!

Ellen is just hilarious....she makes me laugh like no other, with Chris Rock a close second. Never thought of her as having any musical expertise (although she has some pretty groovy dance moves! lol) or imagined her being on Idol, but I am anxious to see what she adds to the show. She will certainly add a comic twist which will fill the void of losing the comedy of what may or may not roll out of the mouth of Paula. Can't wait to see how it turns out! I am a huge fan of both, but never imagined them together...

I know Ellen is very personable and funny but AI will not be the same without Paula.

I was a little confused about her coming on as a judge too, for the lack of music background as well. BUT, after I heard her announcement, I'm kinda excited for her to be on. She will bring the feedback of a typical music lover, like how the rest of us would critique, and she'll have a funny spin on it. I have no musical background at all, but I know what I like to hear, and what I don't like to hear, and I'm the one buying the music. I bet all of the past winners would not have won had the judges voted and not the viewers.

After watching the Ellen Show every day, I was excited to hear this! She said she is going to be the "people's" voice as a judge. She has watched every season and said she will be happy to give her opinion as a person without the musical talent in her past. I never watch American Idol. I will now!!

Although many people think paula is crazy...i really liked her on the show, i think when the contestant is getting picked on she points out Something good about them (even if it's got nothin to do with singing..lol)..but she is part of the show..i don't like that she wont be on it :(...as for ellen, she does make me laugh..but i don't see how she is qualified to be a judge...it doesn't make sense to me ?????

Ellen would be a great replacement for PA...the labels suing her is just another sign of the times...its so tough for labels to make money that they are suing everyone who uses music without paperwork...

I think this is the beginning of the end for American Idol. I have enjoyed watching, listening and then comparing my feelings and opinions with experts. I don't feel the show needs to be funnier. I think it is going to get watered down and lame. Just soooo many better candidates out there. Bad choice if you ask me.

I think it's smart for AI to add Ellen.. As there ratings are good they had times when they dropped a lot more then they should have.
I don't think you need a Musical Background to really be a judge on AI- We all know Good Music when we hear it.. And I think having a judge that's NOT in the Music Industry is a good thing to add to the show.. I think she will speak for all of us voices out there that watch the show :)

I'm not sure how I feel about it. I love Ellen....she's hilarious. But like everyone else, I wonder what musical knowledge she has. But then again....some of the other advice isn't always great either. It will definitely be interesting.
