Q&A #126

Kellsey's sleep issues got me thinking... perhaps you could give your pediatrician a call and ask about melatonin? (It the neurotransmitter that signals your body to go to sleep when it gets darker out.) Back when I used to have to switch between shifts at work it was really helpful with changing my internal clock. Perhaps a really small dose would help her body get used to the new timing more easily.
We've actually thought about that, but I was told that it helps you FALL asleep but not STAY asleep?? She GOES to sleep with NO problem... we lay her in bed and she is out in less than 5 minutes... it's just getting her to stay asleep all night... especially around 5am!! Will Melatonin help with that?

Would it help to move Kellsey's little bed in with the girls? Maybe if she woke early, she could see that they are still sleeping & get the hint. On the other hand, she might have them up too.
Eventually we will do that, but right now I know without a doubt she would wake Kennedy up. She rolls around and talks and is pretty loud. We tried moving her into the "spare" room, but she HATED being in there alone... it's strange, she doesn't mind napping in my room alone but HATED it when we moved her bed to the other room! Guess the change of surroundings upset her. Hopefully when we DO move her to the girls room she will be ok with it!

Do you have the time to take off after being gone for so long?
Fortunately he didn't miss any work. He had a half day on Monday and went to work on Tuesday as scheduled :). He does still have a few days of leave stored up for when he needs it though, thank goodness! He's been saving forever!

um yeah, can you show me one more time, lol....I do it completely different but yours are cuter, wish you lived closer so you could do Megan's.
Steph, remind me and I'll show you how to do Megan's in person when I'm up there!

Now onto the jewelry box, I have been looking for one of these for my 7 yr old! Can't find them anywhere, where did you get it?
I found hers in a little boutique shop here called Cherry Lane. If you live in Clarksville, check it out! Otherwise, check out stand alone stores like that... or... ebay? Let me know if you can't find one and I can see if they have more and ship you one!

How is Kellsey doing? Is she still running a temp? Poor baby. I sure hope she gets over it fast.
It was Kassidy who was sick, not Kellsey... :) She's feeling better though.

How is Kassidy doing? Is she still doing swim team? What age did she start? Our almost 5 year old loves to swim and last summer (at only 4 1/2) he swam 100 yards alone. Several of the lifeguards encouraged us to find him a swim team but we just are not sure if he is too young.
Kassidy is not on the swim team anymore... it was VERY demanding and this has been a hard year for her in school. Then when the outdoor pool closed they moved the practice spot to a pool 45 minutes away which would have been an hour and a half in just travel every day. There was just no way. She will probably pick up soccer again in the Spring and then maybe swimming again in the Fall if they open up the indoor pool closer to home. She started swimming just this year (on a team) but there were some kids who had been on the team since they were really young, since 4 or 5! I say if the lifeguards think he is ready, and he wants to, go for it!

Were you allowed to take video or do they make you purchase the video that they take? Sometimes that's better because then you don't get a million parents standing up trying to capture it on video. And then all those people's heads in the way. But sometimes they charge way too much for the video they take.
We were allowed but I didn't take any. I bought the video they took, so hopefully it will be good. It was $30.00.

She looks so adorable. How can someone that cute cause any trouble at all? LOL
Hmmm I know a few teachers who could probably tell you some stories! LOL

i just wanted to tell you that your husband has made me addicted to the people of walmart blog. then i realized i had a picture of my husband and daughter in walmart that so could be on that blog. so embarrassing
He said you HAVE to send him the picture! LOL He promises he will not post it... but he doesn't promise not to laugh. LOL

I remember reading that at some point in your life you were in the Riverside area, but I would never have imagined you were married in Bloomington. I've just moved to Bloomington to help with my family, it is a small world.
Yep I am a product of Bloomington Christian School. :) I went to junior high and high school there and went to Bloomington Church of the Nazarene which is now called something else... Bridges maybe? It's been a long time!

Renee! Are you from Bloomington? I grew up in Fontana!
Yep! I actually grew up in the San Bernardino/Rialto area :)

The drink thing is really funny, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who does that. When I don't have all of the kids and we get something I make them promise not to tell the one who missed out about what special things we did, LOL (did that make sense?)
LOL yep, we do that a lot!

Renee, for a virus, most doctors suggest using Tylenol rather than Ibuprofen (Motrin). If the fever is hard to break, our suggested alternating Tylenol with the Motrin. Motrin has some aspirin in it & that is why Tylenol is the preferred drug for a viral illness. Just a bit of motherly advice. Hope Kassidy is better in the morning.
We were alternating tylenol and motrin and even that wasn't helping much the first couple days. That was one tough fever! We did end up with just tylenol at the end though :).

Huh, isn't Kameron the little carrier of the strep virus in your house? I'm a little surprised that the doctor didn't put him on antibiotics too since he never seems to get sick, but gets you all sick ;).
Well, We didn't see Kass' regular ped on Saturday, we saw the on-call doc. AND I think once the kids got their tonsils out Kameron was no longer considered to be a carrier... I think. But don't quote me on that. LOL

Don't worry about the sleep thing Renee, I have major issues with Nina right now. For her it is the falling asleep. They just got out of an orphanage, and night time is when they are most :alone" and the hardest time when they face all the realities of their different life. It will happen (but I am planning on doing some Melatonin when I get home)

Ryan has been taking melatonin for years now for his sleep issues. He tends to fall asleep ok most of the time, but rarely stays asleep. Melatonin helps him. Also, his doctor gives him Ativan (Lorazepam is the generic name), and that helps when the Melatonin doesn't seem to.

Renee, I think I'd consider the melatonin again! Gabi uses it and she wakes up far less in the middle of the night while taking it! We had problems with her waking up at 3 am and getting on the computer!

Hey Renee, although melatonin is quite popular among MoM groups (twins/trips/etc), it's NOT a safe idea for any child, especially a toddler. I believe it is available over the counter, but medically speaking I would not recommend for a little one.
Just my $0.02.

There are many Peds out there who prescribe it for use on a short-term basis. As a former peds nurse, I have seen it used successfully, but like ANY med, be it a prescribed or over the counter, ask the MD first. Melatonin is a safe med and it works well, but again do some research.

I agree with Jo. I have been taking meletonin since I was little and it has worked wonders. I do believe it could help Miss Kellsey. Just run it by the pedi first!

We have similar music boxes at the shop and we will ship them. We're actually getting ready to do a reorder pretty soon and I'll update the blog as soon as we do.
Also, sorry that I didn't reply to your comment asking about the Hello Kitty doll house...I didn't notice that I had a comment until recently! Oops. It isn't made by the Sanrio/Hello Kitty company (the Sanrio company just license out their name to other companies a lot) so we don't have them at the shop anyway. We do have nearly a whole fourth of the shop devoted to Hello Kitty though! The girls would have a ball.

Motrin (aka Advil, ibuprofen, etc) does not have aspirin in it. They are two different drugs.

The National Reye's Syndrome Foundation says that either motrin or tylenol is fine to use as a fever reducer.

here is a list of medication ingredients that can cause Reye's Syndrome.
