So, have you heard by now? If you're connected to Middle TN or the adoption world in any way, shape or form, I'm sure you've heard of the Shelbyville woman who adopted a 7 year old boy from Russia last Fall... then last week Torry Ann Hansen had her mother drop this 7 year old off at the airport and put him on a plane, by himself, back to Russia. She attached a note to him saying that she no longer wished to parent him. You can read the story here.
So now, Russia is ticked off. I mean, wouldn't you be? Sure, this mother paid some driver in Russia $200 to pick him up on the other end, but that still left this tiny boy alone on a really long flight. A flight that I was even scared to fly by myself!
So Russia is looking at this small boy, Artyom, and they're thinking about several recent events of Russian orphans being killed by their adoptive families here in the U.S. and they're thinking... "Americans suck!" (What's the Russian word for suck?!) So, as of right now, Russian adoptions to Americans are frozen. Hundreds of families who are in various stages of the adoption process are left holding pictures of their children whom they are longing to hold in their arms. Those adopting kids with special needs realize there's even a greater need as their lives are literally on a time limit.
Here is one story of our friends the Hook family. They happen to live here in Middle Tennessee and are in the process of adopting Evangeline from Russia. This is only one of hundreds...
Turns out that Torry Ann Hansen, who has yet to face any charges or respond to any reporters, is in the middle of another adoption process from the Republic of Georgia right now. The news stations here are following that closely. It will be interesting to see how that works out for her...
So, now that I have you all riled up, I saw THIS article on facebook today. I'm not even going to comment on it. I'll just let you read for yourself. Sarasota doctor's license revoked for aborting wrong fetus.
OK I promise, no more controversy for awhile!

Now, I always say that whoever disrupts shouldn't be allowed to adopt again. The fact that we got our new son a Hungarian passport stopped his previous parents' ongoing adoption from the same country.
When I first saw the adoption story about the Russian boy I thought... it sure sounds awful but I don't know all the details... at least she DIDN'T kill him I was thinking... sad. Can't believe she would adopt again?! I mean be allowed to?
Didn't even read the second story... not up for going there.
I hadn't heard about this yet... she shouldn't be allowed to PARENT ANY child. That is criminal what she did! I'm so sad that people like her can impact the goodwill of many others who are in this for good. As to the other article, I saw it this morning. Criminal charges should be brought up for killing a "wanted" baby. Sad that there's a difference between a "wanted" baby and an unwanted "pregnancy" or "fetus". The two are the same... just minced words. Yup, you got me riled up. :-)
She shouldn't be allowed to adopt. Even more...she should be prosecuted for child abandonment. What the hell is wrong with people. Do they NOT get the concept of unconditional love?
Okay, while I do NOT condone what she did, I do think there has to be something more to the story. It sounds like he was threatening to say the least... I can't help but wonder if she asked for help and was ignored. Like I said, I DO NOT condone her putting a child on an airplane alone. I just think that something is missing from the story.
Yep, riled up here, too. But I, too, agree that there must be more to the story. Did the mother feel that her family was at risk for their lives? Sociopaths can become sociopaths quite young... But I'll be interested in hearing the rest of it. I'm so incredibly sad about the freeze on adoptions. That just gives me chills when I think of those children with Ds and other disabilities that have a big clock ticking against them. Just awful. I hope it can be opened up at least for them...
OMG, OMG, OMG. That's all I can say. How do people do these things? Well, let me start with the abortion issue. Now I'm all for pro choice. I wouldn't choose it, but who am I to say that someone else shouldn't do it. It's not up to me. I don't like when people use it as birth control. I do think it's sickening when it's done this late in pregnancy just because you're told there could be something wrong. There are no guarantees. Tests aren't 100%. You had the test and it told you Kennedy was fine. And of course she is fine, she's a beautiful girl with challenges just like the rest of our kids have. Maybe a little more, but her life is no less important. But what was to say the "normal" twin in this situation wouldn't have had his/her own issues? I think it's wrong that a doctor would abort at this stage, but I think parents who had to conceive by artificial means and with the use of another woman's egg are extremely selfish people to even consider aborting either one of those babies.
Now, as for the adoption situation that is just soooo sad for all of those families. For all of those children. Why would a person go through the financial and emotional journey only to up and decide nope I don't want to do it anymore? I seriously don't get it. I mean all the hoops you had to jump through to get Kellsey. How did she even get cleared to adopt a child? I guess you just never know what a person is going to do. The stress of it all, but really. This woman and those who have killed children have truly ruined things for so many lives.
Charges should be brought against this woman. She virtually abandoned that child. There had to have been other options for her. I hope someone can get that freeze lifted.
Since you adopted Kellsey in the Ukraine and not actually Russia would this freeze have effected you any?
That was the first thing I asked Andrea since we barely started this journey. So far it is affecting adoptions in Ukraine. They are not waiving the 10 day waiting period for anyone! Hopefully when we are ready to go get baby Joy things have calmed down a little! I can't imagine him flying alone. I'm terrified of flying there!
I am probably in the minority here Renee - but I have experience with a bunch of people who have adopted from various places internationally and many of their children have reactive attachment disorder - but by far the kids who have it the worst are ones from Eastern European and Russian orphanages :( I have literally seen a 6 year old child attack his mother and describe in the most minute detail how he was going to get a knife and slit his brother's throat and watch him die - with a smile on his face. There are issues that come up that I don't think the average person knows or is prepared for when they adopt kids from orphanages :( I do not agree with what this mother did - but at the same time - I know that resources are difficult to find to help with such situations and some of these kids have SERIOUS serious issues, and some of them do harm their adoptive families. Of course this doesn't happen in every adoptive family - but - it does happen. The whole story is so sad and I feel for the families waiting for their children and for the children waiting for their families... Just my 2 cents from my experiences with kids with RAD ;)
I agree! Whoever disrupts once shouldn't be allowed to adopt again! Disruption is a terrible thing! That last article about the abortion made my nauseous! How sickening!
Renee, did you have a link to the Hook family? I would like to read about them, but didn't see a link.
We just committed to a little girl in the Ukraine...and I really hope they let adoptions continue...I want my little girl home...
I hope the US prosecutes this lady to the fullest degree, and she probably needs a psych eval.
Must be new adoptions that are frozen because a friend of mine's sister is over in Russia right now finalizing an adoption...
The passage today is a little different. But the way I look at it, life itself is a battle and the Lord doesn't change. He was with the Israelites as they headed into the Promised Land, and He's with you, helping you and giving you strength to face whatever lies ahead. Always here praying!
Deuteronomy 20:1-4: When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people, And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them; For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Hi Renee',
I think as of now they haven't actually frozen them but they are in talks about whether they are going to.
There was a petition that went around to be turned in on Tuesday to request that Obama and the Russian President come to a resolution to prevent this occurring. So, be sure you pray for this!
I think there were quite a lot of signatures on it so that is a good thing.
Anyway, I just didn't want people to panic if in fact they haven't frozen them yet and I couldn't find anything in the news to suggest they actually had.
Hope you all are well btw...
Renee - maybe you understand this better than I do, but once you adopt a child, isn't it as if they are your own? And if I had a 7 year old I couldn't deal with (whatever that would mean) wouldn't I put them in the US foster program? Why on earth would she put the child on a plane and send him back vs. working the channels here?
Why on earth would she put the child on a plane and send him back vs. working the channels here?
good question.
I'm waiting to hear more about it. I hate she put him on a plane she must know that news woudl be involved? and maybe she is one of those odd mums that seek attention. hmm so many questions
and i do not understand why or how the airline would let a child fly that long by themselves. i get flying a couple of states but this is crazy
Ok I almost didn't comment because , I might get alot bad feedback but oh well. Ok so I am half and half with the Adoption story, if the family was in danger there should have been something she could have done here in the states to help her and if it;s life threatening, tough one but I don't think any child adopted or not should remain in a home if he is going to kill his family and he has made that evident. I think they should be evaluated and rehabilitated if possible. On the abortion story OMFG! I am about to say something , others might not agree, I feel terrible for the babies who never got a chance at life, for the parents I don't feel bad one bit. Whatever higher power they believed in they better pray to, because I don't think the Dr meant to do that, something intervened, when things like this happen I think it's fate for the parents, they should have kept both kids from the beginning. Why does D.S scare people so much, my god if I aborted my son I would have never known, he would is just like any child just grasps things a little slower, big deal. The Doctor now wants to die, good for him too, go meet the kids you aborted and explain to them what they did wrong and how much money you got paid and now your life is ruined for your dumb career choice. This is not the first story I heard of the wrong one being aborted, in spain it happened too. I also hear alot of woman who get the amnio done, choose not keep their child because of Down Syndrome and then have trouble getting pregnant, well duh people, mess with mother nature or the lords desire and a test to you it will be. Okay enough said, this subject has me really upset today but thanks for sharing.
Love the main page. Do you think it will always be like this?
