Dr. Suess on IEPs

So, the majority of my google reader and facebook friends have kids with special needs, mostly Down syndrome. Many of those kids are of the age to be in the school system... some are still in preschool, others are in elementary school, a few are even in middle and high school. And so, lately, blog posts and status updates have been filled with IEP stuff. I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. Because, you see, in most schools Spring means IEP meetings which makes many parents (and teachers) want to cry and run screaming through the halls.

SO I've decided to declare this IEP week... let's NOT stress out. Let's laugh, let's smile, let's... breathe. All together now... (teachers too, come on!) deep breath in... deep breath out. Whew! Doesn't that feel better? I hope you enjoy these fun tidbits I've collected from here, there and everywhere! Some will be fun, some will be more serious... hopefully they'll ALL be helpful, even if they just make you laugh a bit. :)

This first one is something that parents and teachers should get a kick out of! I know one parent who printed out copies and handed it out to everyone at the meeting before it started. Our school loves Dr. Suess so it definitely made me laugh. Enjoy!

IEPs by Dr. Seuss

Do you like these IEPs?

I do not like these IEPs
I do not like them, Jeeze Louise
We test, we check
We plan, we meet
But nothing ever seems complete.

Would you, could you
Like the form?

I do not like the form I see
Not page 1, not 2, or 3
Another change
A brand new box
I think we all
Have lost our rocks.

Could you all meet here or there?

We could not all meet here or there.
We cannot all fit anywhere.
Not in a room
Not in the hall
There seems to be no space at all.

Would you, could you meet again?

I cannot meet again next week
No lunch, no prep
Please hear me speak.
No, not at dusk. No, not at dawn
at 5 pm I should be gone.

Could you hear while all speak out?
Would you write the words they spout?

I could not hear, I would not write
This does not need to be a fight.
Sign here, date there,
Mark this, check that
Beware the students ad-vo-cat(e).

You do not like them
So you say
Try again! Try again!
And you may.

If you will let me be,
I will try again
You will see.

Say!

I almost like these IEPs
I think I'll write 6003.
And I will practice day and night
Until they say
"You've got it right!"

I had seen that before, but thank you for posting it! I needed that laugh!

Paul's IEP was supposed to be this Friday (planned weeks ago), then his Inclusion Specialist called Monday wanting to reschedule for Tuesday (yesterday)! Um, NO!!! So, I politely told her that wouldn't work, but sometime after 3 in the next couple of weeks would work...she called back saying she sent out invitations to all the therapists, teachers and principal for Tuesday (next week) at 2:30. Hmm, what happened to after 3?

I have no clue as to when Aiden's Pre-K IEP is going to happen.

If only that could lighten the mood. I've never had such a bad 'team' to work with. The school we are in now is a nightmare..of course, the Spec Ed Director thinks she is "IN CHARGE"..no team effort whatsoever. Makes me want to puke!

Ive posted that before too, I think its great. What is it about IEP that get us soo worked up? The fact that it seems the world is against you (sometimes), we have to dwell on what our children CAN'T do opposed on what the CAN do...I mean really I hate them with a passion

I took it to Lexie's IEP today nd while ours have always gone very well I thought they may all get a kick out of it and it was a hit. I e-mailed it to her resourse room teacher who has since forwarded it to all of the special ed department in our district and I think most of the general teachers.
Thanks again
