Spread the Word to End the Word!

Today is the annual Spread the Word to End the Word! You may be thinking, "What word?" Well, it's the R word, and if you've been reading my blog ANY amount of time, you know what the R word is, because I've talked about it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over! So, do we REALLY need to talk about it again? Probably. Because people are still saying the word retarded every day. I see it on Facebook, I hear it in the grocery store. It's everywhere on TV. I don't GET it. There are SO many other words that can be used. Say "ridiculous", "silly", heck even "stupid" (though Keeghan will tell you that's a bad word! HA!). Kameron will tell you to say, "jank". No matter what word you use, the R word is such an easy word to scratch out of our vocabulary, and it IS offensive to SO many people with disabilities!

Don't tell me I'm being sensitive. Don't tell me I'm overreacting. Don't tell me that I'm too PC, because the fact is, I have two little girls who are going to one day be very hurt by this hate speech. Don't tell me they won't know what you're saying, or that they won't understand, because they will. They are incredibly smart and their feelings get hurt just like yours and mine. So the next time you want to say the word retarded, think about Kennedy and Kellsey... and don't tell me you don't mean them when you're saying it, because every time you say it, you're talking about my girls... and everyone else in the world with an intellectual disability. Spread the word to end the word. Take the pledge.

Reneee, I was just telling my co-worker that my daughter called some one out because they used the r word. She told them its a bad word & to stop saying it. I have told her that it is not technically a curse, it is a very hateful word & we do not use it in our house.

I took the pledge last year & I am proud that our family has banned it from our vocabulary!
