The other day in biology we watched a video on genetic disorders, and one of them was Down syndrome. It said that only 1 in 5 kids w/ ds learns to read and only 1 in 35 learns to write....do you know if this is true??
I have not heard a statistic on reading or writing for kids with Down syndrome, but I do know A LOT of kids with Down syndrome who can read (and I assume write, but my brain thinks about reading first! haha). So that would be 20% of kids with Ds who learn to read... that's pretty low. I'm not sure I believe that. However, if you add in all the kids with Ds who also have other diagnosis'... maybe? I still don't buy it. Maybe someone out there has a statistic.
Looks like she had so much fun, and just LOOK at how long and thick her hair is? Brings back the chemo pictures, and I'm SO glad that is over and DONE!!! Love you Kennedy!!
I know! I love her long hair! It's about the length it was pre-chemo. :) Ahh!!!
wow thats a great idea. can i ask, did you put all his toys in the cupboard and he plays with what he earns. i have something similar, but its nowhere near as focused on positives as this...i have used a naughty shelf for my poppy, and put a toy on there for a day if she has been naughty, its the only thong she has ever been bothered about, i like your idea better, its more positive...giving for good instead of taking away for bad, but i am just confused how they all got in the cupboard to begin with xxxx
Well, it all stemmed from this day which was the breaking point of an ongoing battle of wills between Keeghan and us. I know it's just a phase and the age and this too shall pass... hopefully quickly! HA! This does seem to be working though! He loves earning his "prizes" and will work hard to get them. I've also seen this done where the parent gives the child monopoly money or pretend money of some sort and they have to buy prizes off the shelf and they had shelves of different priced toys, but I think that concept is still a little too complex for him. For now, this is working... most of the time.
Hey, it's the missing post - I saw this before Blogger went haywire.
I actually ended up reposting it (it was still in yahoo search cache). I think the original post as well as all the comments are long gone. :(
WOW! A camera at 7 and she did not look like she was having to much trouble using it. Do not know how the pictures came out she took, but that is okay. After all it took me half a day to figure out my digital camera and some my pictures did not come out right either. Of course some still do not look great. LOL!!
Well, the reason she knows how to use a camera is because she is a camera thief and steals Kassidy's while she's at school! HA! Kass would come home and have like 100 random pictures on her camera. That's when we decided maybe she needed her own... though hers is not nearly as nice as Kass'. Kennedy does pretty well with it. We have lots of pictures of our carpet, but she gets some good shots, too. I will do a blog post soon with some of her art. :)
I hope she enjoys middle school. When do you take your trip with her and your mom to CO?
We leave in a couple weeks! Can't wait! :)
How did she struggle with math in 2nd grade? isn't it just like counting and basic addition at that point?
Obviously it's been awhile since you were in 2nd grade. It's way more than that. And by "struggling" I mean she fell from an A to a B and was struggling to get the concepts. With tutoring she was back up to an A in no time.
& i'm going to add you guys to my blog scroll if thats ok!
Absolutely ok!! Thanks! :)
I am going to missing seeing that tree in the background of all the milestone pictures!! You will have to pick another tree in Colorado!
I'm going to miss our tree, too! It's been in every major picture since 2004! LOL I wonder if, when we come back to visit, the new people who live here will let us take a picture in front of their tree? haha I really hope our new house has a picture tree! :)

I seem to remember that you recommended a filter that you have on the internet for your kids' laptops. I have been trying to find that recommendation again, but I give up. Can you publish that info again?
Response to your first question and answer: I wonder if it's because it's only just in the last decade and in rare cases (special parents who didn't listen to "experts) the last two decades that anyone really tried to teach ppl with DS. IOW Low expectations leading to no results.
At college I also learned the 20% reading rate. Of course reading is defined as having the ability to independently gather information and internalize info from a written text, which, I'm sad to say, is happening with similar ratio of deaf children. Vocabular level reading, that many people with DS reach is still functional illiteracy. Writing is defined as the ability to independently compose texts. After surveying 200 youth and young adults with DS (and a similar number of deaf youth and young adults) with my class, we got very similar results: 17% reading the structular level, 40% reading at vocabular level, 20% reading at word recognition level and the rest below that.
Guess I didn't ask any questions this week, huh? ;o)
Continuing to pray!

I just have to say...when I was in about the 2nd grade, I struggled w/ the multiplication tables..and it wasn't that hard, but I just couldn't get the concept. But I remember that FINALLY I got it. I've never been super good at math, but it was tough for me there for a little bit. My teacher worked with me, and my father did, too. And then one day it just clicked! And as I went through different jobs through the years, sometimes, if I didn't understand something or the concept, or whatever, I'd have to take the time to concentrate so I could get it. Just one of those things!
When I was in second grade, math was just basic addition and simple stuff. Now they're practically learning algebra by that point. I am not good with math so by the time my kids were in 4th grade, I was useless to them if they needed homework help. Luckily my oldest can help my youngest but the oldest is taking college level engineering classes in 9th grade so he's on his own. lol
