This morning, Kellsey had her evaluation for school to see if she qualifies for special education services. Really, this was just a formality... in fact, as soon as I sat down they said, "Well since she has Down syndrome, she automatically qualifies for services in Colorado." Sooo why were we there?! LOL Still though we had to have the meeting so they could meet her and see what goals they would need to work on the most.
There was an OT (who may have doubled as a PT?), a speech therapist, a classroom teacher (who will not be her teacher), the program director and the school psychologist there... and I feel like someone else was there, but I can't remember who... They played with Kellsey, tried to get her to show what she could do, asked me lots of questions and then after an hour or so we talked about what classroom she would be going into. It was pretty easy.
Next up will be her IEP meeting where we will develop Kellsey's specific goals for the year. I know that the OT mentioned that she would like to work on brushing therapy with her to help with any sensory issues, and they're going to work on safety issues for her dare devil tricks on the playground ;). From what I have heard from her teacher in Tennessee, the girl has no fear! I'll also get to talk to the school nurse during the IEP meeting to develop her medical care plan to talk about her allergies, her thickened liquids, her restrictions due to her AAI and the fact that she doesn't sweat. She will actually start school the third week of August, I think. I can't remember.
The one big issue I may have is getting Kameron, Kennedy, Keeghan and Kellsey all dropped off on time. Kameron, Kennedy and Kellsey have to be to school within 10 minutes of each other and if I hit traffic that will be hard, so I may have to think about a *gasp* bus for Kellsey. *groan* We'll see. It depends on where Keeghan ends up and what time he needs to be there and how early I can drop Kameron and Kennedy off. I'm going to take a few test runs in the next week or so at least between Kam and Kenn's school and Kellsey's school, and see what I think. I may be able to do it. Or I may just be dreaming. We'll see.
Next year: Five kids: Two schools. I can already feel the freedom! :)

When Abbie was at a special ed preschool, she rode the bus and LOVED it! So you never know... it might be fun for her too!
We loved the 2 boys with Down Syndrome who rode the van with my boy. They loved the ride (they were on the longest by far) and were always cheerful and chatty (well the chatty one was very chatty--enough for both!) One time we had a driver who played kids song on cassette (oooooollllddd car) for the kids, which they loved. I bet Kellsey would be loved to pieces by her driver.
great news!! yippie for her!! but i was just wondering...why wont you send Kameron and Kennedy in the bus? why Kellsey? wont she be scared or something?

I have sensory issues (HFA) and I love to stare out a moving car window. And I also like my stuff with me. I think the bus would probably suite her better then you taking her because the bus is exact routine daily and SPD people thrive on routine.
On Brush therapy, I have my brush near my bed but my last few experiences were horrid and left me almost screaming. For some reason where the days before I was ok with the brush therapy my skin decided it had enough. I haven't tried it again. I did read it has good results though.
Joaquin ADORES the bus!!!! I never thought I'd put my child let alone 3 year old on the bus but it is honestly the sweetest thing and he truly loves it!
That is a beautiful picture of Kellsey!!! She is growing up so much!!
You will be busy....
I don't know if you have seen these or have tried them for Kelsey but the are coolers for the neck. We just bought some for us for the hot car shows we attend. They are long pieces of material filled with some kind of something but you soak it in water and then the whatever it is expands. then you put in in the fridge. It can stay cold for about three hours. You just put it around your neck. The other day my husband had it on while mowing in the really hot heat and didn't break a sweat.. When we got them I thought of Kelsey and wondered if that would help keep her cool.
Would love to hear more about Kellsey's specific goals for the year! My little Julian just had his one year evaluation...lots of goals (mostly relating to getting to stand/walk, eating skills, early language skills, you know the drill)
Eian rides the bus to school everyday. He loves it.
