I am also not a fan of play-doh. It's messy. It sticks to carpet. It gets everywhere. It's just not a necessary part of life. Markers are another thing we use sparingly when the kids are little. Yes, I know they make washable markers, but you know, crayons are easier, cleaner and well, I'm all about easier and cleaner! So we keep markers up high and use them under supervision until the kids are old enough to use them responsibly. As a result, so far, I've never had sharpie on my couch, and the only clothes I've had ruined by marker (and paint! GRRR... don't even get me started!) has come home from school.
However, when Kellsey went into the hospital for her surgery, they gave her a new magna doodle. Remember?
This magna doodle was much fancier than any we have bought her in the past... it came with lots of extra stuff like stencils, and markers. Frank and I made a mental note to remove those markers before that board went down to her room.
Well.
Guess what?
We're not perfect parents.
I know. This is shocking to some of you. (HA!)
We forgot.
Kellsey's been down in her room today, playing nicely. We heard her babbling away like usual and then we heard Kameron exclaim, "Oh my GOSH, Kellsey!"
That's never good.
I walked into the room and found this:
And all I could do was say, "NAUGHTY!!!" Oh and she KNEW she was in trouble. She hid her face and turned around like "Ut oh, I'm busted!"
And then I just stood there in shock. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. I've never actually seen anything quite like it in person. I've seen other people's kids do stuff like this. They've posted pictures and I've giggled and said, "Thank GOD that's not my kid!" And so after I recovered from my shock, I decided to snap a picture so you all can be thankful that for today, it's not your kid!
I will say, she did NOT color on the carpet, her bed, or any other toy, and for that I am thankful. She DID however color the inside of her mouth, and her eyeball. *sigh*
Our house is once again marker free, and just for the record... at least she doesn't know how to use scissors and chop off all her hair. *ahem*

Have you seen pictures of Kaitlyn lately? I'm not sure if I've actually gotten a good shot of it recently. Anyways, 9 years old and guess what? She STILL cuts her hair with scissors. I don't know what to do about her. She's always in the past done underneath in the back somewhere not noticeable. This time she did right up front and right down to her head. Now it has grown out to sort of a bang, but it drives me nuts. I can't tell you how many times I have had to tell her not to play with scissors and cut her hair. Oh, and she probably is permanently colored rainbow on her hands. She's my artsy one, but she's a messy artist.
I like the rules that you have at your place, Renee! I had one son that cut his hair once, and that was it. AND,,,I'm dating myself, but I really don't think that they had markers for kids when my kids were little. I could be totally wrong, tho.Would getting the markers inside her mouth hurt her in any way? And oh my gosh,,,on the eyeball,,,OUCH! I guess that will come off with plain soap, or do you have to use something else? I noticed she certainly isn't smiling for the camera, so she definitely knows she got in big trouble! One thing, tho,I guess this means she's feeling better than she was last week,,,for that we can be thankful!

Oh my goodness! This cracked me up! :)She looks like she knows she is in trouble..LOL
"Ahem!!!!!!" Not to make you and Frank feel guilty, who "forgot" to remove the markers? Who is naughty?! Ha, ha! Do you think she sat in front of the mirror to "work" on her sweet little face? I'm sorry, but when I saw her picture with the marker all over it, I laughed out loud!!!! How much of the marker came off when you washed her face? Thank you Kellsey, you made my day!
Wow. She must have looked into a mirror to have done that. She's just trying to copy you and your make-up duties. I would send the hospital a picture of "what happens when you give children markers".
Now about the scissors. We had rules that you had to sitting at the table and always but back in the craft box, before leaving the table. Pretty much the same rule for markers and water colors. Children DO need to learn how to use scissors before going to school. It has to do with eye-hand coordination. Now let those 2 little ones learn how to cut paper!!

This will be in the high school year book page for sure! As a teacher I give you props for using crayons more than markers! They are better for OT skills for all kids! It's because you have to push down harder on a crayon to get a nice "color" to show up vs a marker which just shows up the second it touches paper! See, you're helping your kids have strong hand muscles (-:
Hope Kellsey is back to her normal "color" after a good bath!
Oh my! She really got good coverage :) I gasped when I saw the picture...she looks so pitiful :( We are pretty free with the craft supplies here at our house...so far nobody has colored anything other than the things they are supposed to. At the preschool I teach at we teach our 2 yr old's to use scissors...a few moms were quite shocked and commented they would never let their kids use scissors. We just leave them sitting in the art center along with markers, crayons and glue. The kids have never cut/colored themselves, each other, floor, wall, etc. I would never have given my kids scissors at 2 though either. I am thankful that wasn't my child today :) LOL
OMG this is absolutely hilarious abd she is absolutely adorable!! I'm sure you don't agree today, but I bet if you look at this picture in 10 years you will!
By the way, I agree with your rules. Especially about play-doh. I always felt like I had to let them play with it because it's "good for thier fine motor skills!". Well it's not good for my carpet or sanity! Especially when my sister in law always took great joy in buying them crazy colors like BLACK play-doh!
Jennifer
That was my laugh for the day;) thanks for that!! and yes i am very thankful that is not my kid today!! Avery has done that to me a couple of times..she only colors on the parts of the skin that are free..and one time it was permanant..so just be gald its not permanant!!:)
Conversation with our five year old:
"Hey, you have black marker all over your face."
"I do??"
"Yeah. Did that happen before or after your school pictures?"
"Um. After? I think."
Awwww, its kinda precious! I know frustrating to you as a Mom but she doesnt really "know" that doing that is "naughty", how would she know? She must have just got swept up in the moment, thought "this is fun" and then "oooops, it wasnt okay to do this"??? LOL, one of those moments that you wont forget! Its funny too because when my kids were young, I too HATED play dough, paints and markers, avoided them like the plague! But NOW as a Gramma, I not only let my grandson play with ALL of them at my house, I am even the one that BUYS it all for him!!! For as much as I hated it because of all the mess and cleanup when mine were young, here I am now saying "oh its no big deal, let him play, I'll just clean it up later". Look out Renee, it may happen to YOU that way too! :-) robbin in chicago
Awww hilariously cute!!!
I always wonder what possesses small children to always color on THEMSELVES when left alone with markers and ink pens, especially to color on their FACES!! Some things we'll never know! lolol
Incidents like this are so hard to be stern with the kids about, because you are using everything in you to stifle your laughter!!! aahahaha
I have to add that I must compliment your budding artist on her use of two colors, and the blending in the chin region!
Coupled with the fact that she is wearing a black turtle neck like a true pretentious artist, I'd say this is very avant garde of her! ;-)
Sooo cute!
She actually did get her eyeball? Looked really close! Assuming her eye's okay...
Praying in Seattle!
Psalms 69:1-3, 13 Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God...But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

Oh boy! Well the boys have washable markers but there have been multiple times where we've scrambled to find pants to cover them up as we're trying to head out the door and they decided to play artsy fartsy all over their legs.
I think it's a great thing to identify the self though... it's like saying "I'm here" so I don't freak out when they do it. I also don't tend to do anything but giggle when I see it on other people's kids. No judgement here! Rock on Kellsey!
I cannot stop laughing.
Well, I do need to compliment her on how symmetrical her face is! Only red on her eyes and nose, blue on the outside of her cheeks, and then bringing the two colors together on her chin! Looks like you've got a real artist on your hands :)
LOL She did a nice job!!
I literally laughed out loud! I know you don't see the humor in this, but that is FUNNY! Cute as a button....you wanted her to come out of her shell...well there it is! P.S. We don't do markers either!
OMG that is SO funny! I know, we can all say that because, like you stated, it's not our kid in the picture. I'm sure it was frustrating for you. We all have things we won't let our kids watch or play with because of personal preference. I however, let my kids have it all, and have in turn dealt with cut hair, whiskers(poor kitty!) and I think everything in my house has been colored or written on. We discipline but laugh about it most of the time...it's their artsy side coming out, right?! haha
