Spread the Word...

Today is the day... it comes around every March.

Spread the word to end the word.

Retarded. 'Tard.
It's the same thing, you know.
"I'm such a tard."
Really? You know what I just heard you say?
"I'm such a Kennedy."

"That was so retarded!"
I heard... "That was so Kellsey!"

The diagnosis of Down syndrome comes with a diagnosis of mild to moderate mental retardation.

It's a medical diagnosis.

It's NOT a word to be thrown around lightly, used to insult yourself or others.

If you don't MEAN to insult my girls by saying it, then don't use it.

End of story.

Take the pledge. End the word.

I am curious how you feel about using the word retarded to actually mean having a low IQ. The school district that I work in (Houston, TX) has recently switched from a label of mentally retarded to a label of intellectual disability. They mean exactly the same thing, just different words. Is one better than the other?

Continuing to lift up prayers!
Psalms 63:5-8 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.

Love that pic. :) Gave you guys a shoutout on my Spread the Word post today too (a day late lol). I actually do think about Kennedy and cringe every time someone says that word. You want to say "if you knew what I knew, you wouldn't say that".

I want to thank you for bringing this awareness to the forefront. Last year, when you posted this, I went to the website and signed the pledge. I also have Spread the Word "liked" or whatever on my FB. It's made me rethink things a lot (not that I would go around using that word before, but now I'm hyper-aware of it). I've taught my own children that we NEVER use that word EVER!

My sister had disabilities and nobody referred to her as 'retarded'. In Italian it means 'late'. I find words are so often used incorrectly. Words matter!
